Various reasons, but most of all I am required to write it from memory on the course exams.

Knowing it also helps me to keep it in mind while reading the text and to understand what and why the author is writing and how to easier apply it.

Z, I think he wanted you to tell him that its part of your course of study for your degree, and what that degree is.
