Matthew 6: 1-4 Give to the Needy

Giving to the Needy

Matthew 6:1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

When you give someone something, it's a gift from the heart. It doesn't make you feel better. It doesn't make you look better from the social media. It doesn't make your life better. It's a gift from one person to another.

If you put rules and expectations on a gift, like telling the recipient not to spend the money on booze, drugs, or cigarettes, but instead buy some food.... it's no longer a gift. It becomes a contract.

If you boast about it, take recognition for it. It becomes advertising and it's an expense.

God knows the value of your gift.

Giving

Giving to the needy is one thing. Giving a hand to someone when they are down and in need of a hand is a worthy thging to do.

Giving to the Lazy is another thing all together! We have way to many people in our society who think the world owes them a living. Now we have an idiot in the whitehouse who has discovered that by giving working folks money away, the "takers" in our society will vote him into power. Thank god for term limits on the presidency!

There things in this world that aren't policital...

However, idiocy and stupidity, so clearly evident in your post, seem to know no bounds.

It's called character.

What you do when you think people aren't watching.

[2] The hypocrites: the scribes and Pharisees, see Matthew 23:13, 15, 23, 25, 27, 29. The designation reflects an attitude resulting not only from the controversies at the time of Jesus' ministry but from the opposition between Pharisaic Judaism and the church of Matthew. They have received their reward: they desire praise and have received what they were looking for.

If one is looking for recognition for giving, then it becomes about them and not the person in need. It's all about the motivation. Do we give to others because of compassion for our fellow human being? Or, do we give to others because it makes us feel good about ourselves?

Or worse, do we do it for the appearance.

Yes, if you give a gift, you should not mark it with your expectations. Yes, boasting about it negates that it was a gift. However, Cheez is right about character; I would hope that it includes both the giver and the receiver. Hope is something that cannot be judged.
