Elle, a friend's son has had one for about 6 years. I wanders freely in his bedroom. I think it all comes down to getting one young enough to "train" it to be a house pet and to be handled.

You are aware that turtles are a life long pet, right? As in they live as long as people do. You cannot just release one in the wild after it has been raised as a pet when you decide you don't want to bother with it anymore.
Not criticism, just info for you to be aware of. I would love to get a turtle for a pet. I think they are cool.

Most reptiles carry salmonella. Just wash your hands after handling them, and you're fine.
