Biggest engine breakthrough since the jet

British company claims biggest engine breakthrough since the jet | Reuters

Reaction Engines Ltd believes its novel Sabre engine, which would operate like a jet engine in the atmosphere and a rocket in space, could displace rockets for space access and transform air travel by bringing any destination on earth to no more than four hours away.

SSTO here we come, I hope. And once we get there, we can use this to go to the stars!!!!!!

Warp Drive More Possible Than Thought, Scientists Say | Space.com

Now, it's theoretical, true, but note that they are in the lab at Johnson Space Center now, so who knows....

This will be interesting. It's a modification of the SCRAMJET, but seems to me the last test of the X-51 SCRAMJET didn't go so well.

So not only are they fighting the SCRAMJET technology, but the additional modifications as well.

Every new jump in capability costs. Look at the early jet days. And the early supersonic days. And that last failure wasnt due to some problem with the scramjet, but a control fin that didnt work. You can do millions of things to prevent stuff like this, but at the end of the day, it's a thing made by imperfect people in an imperfect universe, stuff happens.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that. I've worked in the Aerospace industry since F-14 days.

I am looking forward to them working out the kinks and proving the technology, just pointing out the obvious.

Like the multiple catastrophic failures we had with the first vertical-launched cruise missiles. A system and capability that is taken for granted now.

They'll get there; hope to hear more good stuff about that engine soon.
