Toyota went to a timing chain in the Corolla with the 1998 model year. That means it cannot possibly be the timing belt (ya don't got one). Must be the serpentine belt.

I wouldn't take this as gospel, but this says the 2004 corolla utilizes atiming chain, not a timing belt, and chains do not dry rot...
"The 2003-2008 Corolla comes with the 1.8-liter 16-valve DOHC engine with the VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing). This engine uses a long-lasting timing chain; there is no timing belt to replace."
