Picked the X5-5850 from these guys. The comparable unit from Dell was $400 more but came with a bunch of software I wasn't interested in.

Apple has new Vista bashing vids on their website... saw them on the early news this morning on TV...

I noticed that not many people said they liked Vista. The most common statement was that they got used to it. To me that is a sad commentary for an operating system that was supposed to bring so many improvements to PC owners.

I bought a Vista ready HP about a year and a half ago and upgraded to Vista when it was released to the public in early '07. Immediately upon installation, my HP all-in-one printer would no longer work with my HP computer. It took more than a month of calls to Rangoon tech support for me to realize that they were not prepared to cope with the Vista changes. By late summer a new driver was finally issued for the printer.

Then a little at a time other quirky things started going wrong. Almost everytime I tried to close IE7 it would give me a failure message and let me know that it was restarting forcing me to cancel the action if I didn't want it to restart. Switched to using Firefox most of the time after that. Then the desktop started refreshing on its own about every 5-10 minutes. I tried solving that problem for about 3 months and finally gave up. This slowed the computer down and if I had the All Programs stack open, it would close.

I finally admitted defeat and did a system restore to Windows XP this weekend and I'm feeling much better now.

No, I have XP on my pooters. I borrowed a laptop for awhile that had Vista on it.

I don't see why. Microsoft just released SP3 for XP, PC vendors have successfully lobbied Microsoft into allowing new systems to ship with XP, Windows 7/Vienna/whatever they're calling it now, is right around the corner, and other OS's are gaining in popularity not only with whiz kids but with the general public as well.

That's FAR from having to get used to Vista.

Business section of the Washington Post also announced over the weekend that even though XP distribution would end in '08, they have extended support for Dell, HP and other companies for new installations on their computers through 2010 and will continue to retail XP as well. Sounds like it will be around for sometime to come.
