Snodgrass to take to skies at Air Expo ’03

PATUXENT RIVER NAVAL AIR STATION, MD—Retired Navy Capt. Dale “Snort” Snodgrass will take to the skies in his F-86 Sabre at Air Expo ’03 here May 24 and 25. Headlining Pax River’s celebration of a century of powered flight and the station’s 60th anniversary will be the Navy’s Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels.

After 26 years of service, Snodgrass retired from the Navy in 1999 as “high-time” pilot in the F-14 Tomcat with more than 4,800 hours and more than 1,200 carrier arrest landings. He was the first flight school graduate to be selected for F-14 Tomcat training and the first non-fleet experienced pilot to carrier qualify, both night and day. In 1985, Snodgrass was selected as the Navy’s Fighter Pilot of the Year.

During his Navy career, Snodgrass had 12 operational Fighter Squadron/Wing tours including command of Fighter Squadron 33 during Desert Storm and command of all the Navy's F-14's as Commander Fighter Wing Atlantic.

Snodgrass brings all his experience to his air show performance, flying the North American F-86 Sabre jet fighter. The first swept-wing airplane in the U.S. fighter inventory, the F-86 scored consistent victories over Russian-built MiG fighters during the Korean War.

Various models of the Sabre held world speed records for six consecutive years, setting five official records.

In September 1948, an F-86A set the Sabre's first official world speed record of 570 mph. This mark was bettered in 1952 by an F-86D that flew at 698 mph. The "D" became the first model of a fighter to better its own record, in 1953, with a run of 715 mph.. U.S. production of the Sabre Jet ended in December 1956.
