A Waldorf man who police said appeared to be under the influence of PCP stabbed at least four people in Charles County last night, including a 79-year-old man and two others who apparently were attacked at random, authorities said.

Charles County sheriff's officers apprehended a 54-year-old man about 7 p.m., shortly after they arrived at Holly Lane and Route 301 in Waldorf to find him beating a woman, said Capt. Joseph C. Montminy of the sheriff's office. The man was being questioned last night but had not been charged.

Montminy said the man, a construction worker, forcefully entered a house on Holly Lane and stabbed a 46-year-old construction worker, critically wounding him. He then walked across the street to another house and stabbed three other people, Montminy said.

"He just started stabbing," said Debra Wills, 41, who ran out of one of the houses and called 911 from a nearby hardware store. "He was screaming all kinds of crazy things."

The 46-year-old man, whom police did not identify, was in "very critical condition" at Washington Hospital Center, Montminy said. A nurse at the hospital said the man was in surgery late last night.

A 55-year-old woman who was beaten and stabbed in the chest, abdomen and arms was in serious condition at the D.C. hospital, Montminy said. The elderly man, who authorities said has Alzheimer's and was cared for by the female victim, was stabbed in the chest and was being treated last night at Civista Medical Center in La Plata, authorities said. A 45-year-old Waldorf man was stabbed in the eye and face, but the injuries were not believed to be life threatening, Montminy said.

Besides the stabbing victims, several others were assaulted, Montminy said. Police did not identify any of the victims.

Witnesses and authorities said the man was acting erratically and appeared to be high on PCP at the time of the attacks.

A 22-year-old man, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the attacker pulled up to his house on Holly Lane in a pickup truck and asked him to come out for the night. The younger man, who had known him from construction jobs, said no because he did not feel well.

He said the man then grabbed him by the throat, shouting: "You think you're better than me. I'll kill you." He said the attacker pulled out a switchblade and tried to stab him. The man said that he ran into the house but that the 46-year-old man, who also knew the attacker from construction jobs, opened the door.

Witnesses said the attacker burst inside, grabbed the 46-year-old and stabbed him repeatedly. The 22-year-old and two women in the house then ran away.

Montminy said the assailant then ran across the street to another house, where he stabbed the 79-year-old man, the 55-year-old woman and the 45-year-old man, all of whom were sitting on the front porch. He apparently did not know those victims, Montminy said.

Adults carried two children to safety when the attacks started at the second house, Montminy said.
