let's screw the taxpayer!! WELCOME TO THE "FREE STATE"!!!!

Not only did our state polits cut services, they raised taxes so they can get a thrill thinking they're balancing a budget that was more than a half-billion in the black a few short years ago.

Well, Soouthern Marylandites, guess what happens now? Yeah, that's right! Since the state is now cutting funds to programs that are partially funded through county budgets, you can be assured the counties will also raise their taxes to make up for the shortfall from the state. For those who haven't seen the passed 2008 Maryland proposed budget and the cuts and taxes attached to it, go to:
http://mlis.state.md.us/Other/Fiscal_Briefings_and_Reports/SenateActionOnAdminProposals.pdf or Maryland General Assembly Home Page to see how your outrageously high Maryland taxes are now being used to pay for less.

Its the lousy Governor we have, couldnt run Baltimore then some people voted him in to be Governor.

As explained to me by another forumite, M O M needed Baltimore to win, so he promised (and delivered) the extra school funding which the previous Guv would not. M O M got elected, and now we have to live with paying for Baltimore schools. If Baltimore schools are anything like D.C. schools (one of the highest per capita costs with no educational results), we're throwing our money down a hole. But that's what happens when a monopoly is running things.

Think Baltimore schools rank at the bottom in Maryland and Im sure PG schools are next to the bottom

I was wondering how long it would take to blame O'Malley... Not long... He is trying to fix the problem that was left to him... Our former governers yes, one of each party left him with this mess. You cannot just keep spending and closing your eyes.. I think if they really wanted to that they could save the tax payers a lot of money by cutting out all the waste and perks that government gets and gives our leaders... The people they should look out for are the real working people who keep the government running... It is not going to be easy and it is a shame.. You and me are going to have to suffer for all the overspending and poor choices made in the past... But, I guess it is like a credit card eventually it will catch you and you have to pay and pay....

He's done a fine job of getting rid of that pesky budget surplus that was left to him.

What are you talking about?? Erlich left office with a $1 billion dollar surplus.... One year later O'spenda Malley has a 1.7 billion deficit.

:shocked: That's a crock of stuff if I ever heard it!

I lived in MD for 20 years, left for 11 and near the end of those years was simply stunned (but ecstatic) when MD elected a Republican governor! Wow - what a major upset that was. I've tried to follow MD politics as best as I could from afar and when I learned I would be moving back (2-1/2 yrs ago) was happy (for the most part) with the progress that had been made under Erlich's administration. Still, I realized I was moving back to the "People's Republic of MD".

And, unfortunately, the democrat machine was in full force during the last elections and republicans weren't able to maintain the governor's position, but excuuuuuse me - there was a SURPLUS when I moved here and now suddenly under less than 1 year with M O M - it's G-O-N-E!

Yes there was a surplus on the day Erlich left office. MD had taken in more money than it had spent up to that point but the "bills" hadn't come in yet. Bills that Erlich knew were coming but he was out the door before they came. You can buy a real cool car, no money down, and eveything is cool until the first payment is due.

Wrong! wrong! wrong!
This budget shortfall comes about directly because of MOM! It started back in Glendennings reign when O'Maley, then Mayer of Baltimore pushed for a VERY large budget for Baltimore schools. Through the Thornton commission recommendation, a nearly 2 billion dollar education package was pushed through. Problem was, the state had no way to pay for it, so it just sat on the back burners through the end of Glendennings Governorship. Earlich sat on it and didn't plan on doing anything with the Thornton plan because it only benefited one area of Maryland at a very substantial cost. During O'Maley's campaign for Governor, he promissed Baltimore that he would get the package funded for Baltimore if they voted for him, they did, and he did, wiping out our surplus rainy day fund and putting us into a deficite.

Now you and I are being forced to pay for the an enhanced education package for Baltimore's low income idiots who don't give a damn about getting an education. This type of plan has been tried before and NEVER works!

No, not wrong. Erlich was Gov for four years and was in the position to do something about it besides ignoring it. Don't assign blame to Parris and MOM and ignore the four years in between. The fact is that Bob was there, he know about it, and didn't take proper action. If he was against Thorten or whatever, he should've stood up and addressed head on.

He DID do something! By not pushing for funding for a bad piece of legislature and just letting it sit, he kept the budget balanced and accumulated a surplus! Without funding the Educational Package would have mouldered forgotten and unused. But MOM couldn't let his pet project go, he through funding at it immediately whether it destroyed Maryland's budget and hence Maryland!

Again, he DIDN'T do anything except avoid the issue. If he didn't like it, he should've done his job as Gov and pushed for repeal or modification to his liking. Don't use the excuse that it would've never made through legislature. We don't know because it was never attempted so that's an unknown. He can't have it both ways. Heck, if you're gonna cast blame two Govs ago then Bob shares responsibilty for what's going on.

Was it you that left red karma without signing? Whoever it was is spineless.

You are just bound and determined to place the blame on a Republican even though it was a Democrate who wrote and approved the bill with a Democratic majority house, and now a Demoncrate with a D-majority house has funded it without a proper budget and had to go into special session to squeeze more money out of all of us to pay for it!

Earlich knew that he could never get legislation passed that went against what the D's wanted with a huge D-majority in house. He did the smart thing, the only thing.

It is people like you that keep yourself blind to the truth that is barreling this country down the steep slope to socialism.

Not me. I make it a practice to send green only and I sign. At any rate, I'm bound and determined to put blame on all who are to blame. You seem bound and determined to cast blame on all except for the Republican. Doesn't matter if Erlich though he couldn't get legislation through the legislature. He didn't even try. If he had tried and it failed then blame would be soley on the Dems. But he didn't try and the blame is shared by the Dems and the Repubs.
