Discussions of Stadium Come Back Into Play

I guess in 1987 this didn't fit Charles County's vision of low paying retail jobs, inept transportation routes, overcrowded schools and the plethora of Section 8 housing. It seems that in Charles County, if you aren't some type of retail store, you can't do business there.

After more than 15 years on the back burner, talk of building a minor-league baseball stadium in Charles County has moved to the fore again.

The Charles County Economic Development Commission met recently with the Maryland Stadium Authority to explore the viability of the project, which was last seriously explored in 1987.

To Commissioners President Murray D. Levy (D-At Large), the idea seems promising.

"Sounds like a great opportunity," he said in an interview this week. "The devil is in the details."

Among those details, funding for the stadium is among the most salient.

"To call it a plan is premature," said Marcia Stevenson, marketing director for the Charles County Economic Development Commission. "There's discussion -- an idea is being put out."

If and when the county commissioners give the go-ahead, the Maryland Stadium Authority could help find funding sources, said Richard W. Slosson, executive director of the stadium authority.

Hughesville is one of the locations county officials have been considering, but there is no word yet on size, cost or even home team.

"Having a team is important to getting money," Slosson said.
