St. Mary’s KIWANIS Sponsoring Safety Day for Youth
Child Safety Seat Inspections, CPR Education, Flower Sale Fundraiser

St. Mary’s County – On Saturday, May 10, 2008, the St. Mary’s KIWANIS Club will be sponsoring a safety day and flower sale at the First Colony Shopping Center in California Maryland. The event will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parents are encouraged to bring their children from all ages.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. parents of infants and toddlers are offered child safety seat inspections by certified child passenger safety technicians from law enforcement and other agencies. Additionally, parents of children between the ages of 4 and 8 are encouraged to stop at the child safety seat inspection. This age group is often considered the “forgotten child”. This age group is often moved too early from child safety seats directly to adult seat belt systems. The, law at this time, in Maryland is children to the age of 6 and to the weight of 40 pounds must be in an appropriate child restraint system (must meet both age and weight). Though this is the law, young children benefit from booster seats or other child restraint systems to approximately age 8, 80 pounds and reaching a height of 4 foot 9 inches. Many parents do wait out the Maryland law at the age of 6, however, a booster seat is generally designed to be used from 65 to 100 pounds. Parents are strongly encouraged to use the booster seat to the maximum weight. In St. Mary’s County close to 80% of child safety seats are used incorrectly. At the seat inspection technicians will teach parents proper installation of the restraint, tips to make installation easy, check for restraint recalls, and offer best practices by the American Academy of Pediatrics for transporting children.

For young children to teens CPR Bears will be on site for education and hands on practice. Bike safety information will be provided. Members from Lexington Park volunteer fire and rescue will be on hand to offer safety information for fire and other emergencies and will offer a view of their rescue equipment. Health Connections, the outreach of St. Mary’s Hospital and Health Department, will provide health information for parents and children of all ages. Mr. Yuk magnets and stickers from Maryland Poison Center will be available. The Department of Natural Resources will be on hand providing water and boating safety information. The St. Mary’s County Library will have the Words on Wheels (WOW) van on site and will offer parents and youth to register for a library card. Law Enforcement officers will interact throughout the day with children and teens. Flowers will be on sale, including beautiful hanging plants which would make a wonderful Mother’s Day gift.

McGruff the Crime Dog, Vince and Larry – The Crash Test Dummies, OPIE the Otter, the mascot of St. Mary’s Health Department and, Sparky will be making an appearance. Chick-fil-a coupons will be given to anyone making a donation to St. Mary’s Hospital.
