Shelters Closed, Third Yard Waste Site Established, Donations Accepted/Available

The St. Mary’s County Emergency Operation Center is coordinating efforts to assist citizens in the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel. The Department of Public Works, State Highway Administration, SMECO, METCOM, VERIZON, GMP, COMCAST, and Fire and Rescue Volunteers are all working diligently in the recovery and restoration of services.

• St. Mary’s County shelters have been closed. The Department of Social Services and the Red Cross are on standby to coordinate lodging for those who need it. Please call the Disaster Information Hotline at 301-475-4911 for instructions.

• The St. Mary’s County Landfill will be open on Sunday, September 21, 2003, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (normal business hours) to accept large household waste items such as carpet, insulation, sheet rock, appliances, and furniture that have been damaged by Hurricane Isabel. The six (6) Convenience Centers will be open normal business hours on Sunday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, to accept household trash. Please bring yard waste to the three designated sites.

• St. Mary’s Department of Public Works has established three locations that will accept yard waste only, free of charge. Yard waste includes logs, limbs, stumps, brush, leaves. All other solid waste must go to the landfill and convenience centers (normal charges apply). The three sites are located at the left side of Golden Beach Road, ½ mile east of MD Route 5, on Piney Point Road, MD Route 249, ½ mile south of Happyland Road, and at the Kessler Development Company site, adjacent to Kessler Body and Equipment Company, on Three Notch Road in Dameron. All three sites will be open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM beginning Saturday, September 20, 2003, seven days a week until further notice. Please do not send yard waste to the St. Andrews Landfill during this time.

• Donations consisting of non-perishable items and blankets will be accepted between 8:00AM and 5:00 PM, Saturday, September 20, 2003, at Leonard Hall Recreation Center, adjacent to the Governmental Center in Leonardtown. Citizens who need these donated items OR who would like to volunteer their help should call Community Services Coordinators for instructions, today until 5:00 PM, at 301-475-HELP.

• SMECO will have dry ice available again tomorrow and will announce the times and locations after 7:00 AM tomorrow morning. For more information, please call SMECO Hotline at 1-877-747-6326.
