Gaza's day of carnage - 40 dead as Israelis bomb two UN schools | World news | The Guardian

"Israel's assault on Gaza has exacted the bloodiest toll of civilian lives yet, when the bombing of UN schools being used as refugee centres and of housing killed more than 50 people, including an entire family of seven young children.

The UN protested at a "complete absence of accountability" for the escalating number of civilian deaths in Gaza, saying "the rule of the gun" had taken over. Doctors in Gaza said more than 40 people died, including children, in what appears to be the biggest single loss of life of the campaign when Israeli bombs hit al-Fakhora school, in Jabaliya refugee camp, while it was packed with hundreds of people who had fled the fighting.

Most of those killed were in the school playground and in the street, and the dead and injured lay in pools of blood. Pictures on Palestinian TV showed walls heavily marked by shrapnel and bloodstains, and shoes and shredded clothes scattered on the ground. Windows were blown out.

Hours before, three young men who were cousins died when the Israelis bombed Asma elementary school in Gaza City. They were among 400 people who had sought shelter there after fleeing their homes in Beit Lahiya, in northern Gaza.

Abed Sultan, 20, a student, and his cousins, Rawhi and Hussein Sultan, labourers aged 22, died. Abed Sultan's father, Samir, said the bodies were so mangled that he could not tell his son from the cousins. "We came to the school when the Israelis warned us to leave," he said. "We hoped it would be safe. We were 20 in one room. We had no electricity, no blankets, no food."

At least thirty people were reportedly killed and 53 wounded in an explosion in a UN-run school in the town of Jabalya in the northern Gaza Strip, according to Palestinians. The IDF issued a statement saying the school grounds were used by terrorists to fire mortar shells at the troops.

The infantrymen returned mortar shell fire into the school grounds, the army said. Defense officials told The Associated Press that booby-trapped bombs in the school triggered the secondary explosions which killed scores of Palestinians on the site. LINK

UN rejects IDF claim

UN rejects IDF claim Gaza militants operated from bombed-out school - Haaretz - Israel News

"The United Nations on Wednesday denied Israel Defense Forces claims that there were Palestinian militants in the Gaza school bombed by Israel on Tuesday.

Christopher Gunness of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said the organization is 99.9 percent certain there were no militants or military activity in its school.

That does not necessarily contradict Israel's claim that the militants were operating close by, Gunness said.

Gunness put the death toll of the shelling at 40, and added that the agency wants an impartial investigation of witnesses, Israeli military photographs or any other evidence.

The IDF on Tuesday released video footage from 2007 showing Palestinian militants firing from the school compound and carrying a rocket launcher with them as they flee the scene.

Gunnes said the 2007 video bears no connection to Tuesday's military strike on the school.

The IDF bombed the UNRWA school, Fakhura, on Tuesday after militants fired mortars at troops from inside the school, according to the IDF Spokesman's Office. The bodies of militants were found inside, it added.

Three shells hit the girls elementary school, which is located near the Jabalya refugee camp, according to Gunness.

Fakhura, like many other UNRWA schools, was serving as a refuge for people who had been forced to flee their homes.

Gaza: The risk of complications

The risk of complications - Haaretz - Israel News

"The grave incident in which a UNRWA school in the Jabalya refugee camp was shelled, killing dozens of civilians, attests to the risk of complications that dogs any operation such as Cast Lead.

The operation in Gaza is nearing the end of its second week, but Israel still cannot say it has achieved its goals. According to the Israel Defense Forces, Hamas' military networks have been battered and the organization's leadership is broadcasting willingness to call a cease-fire, but not on the terms that Israel wants. At the same time, the IDF has suffered casualties, including from friendly fire, which is natural when an army fights under conditions of uncertainty that lead to mistaken identities.

On the domestic front, the public has so far displayed noteworthy stamina, despite repeated rocket attacks on Ashkelon, Ashdod and Be'er Sheva, and the fact that the area vulnerable to Hamas' long-range rockets now reaches Gedera. On the diplomatic front, Israel has rejected approaches by friends interested in helping mediate with Hamas.

The pressure on Hamas is growing. Its leadership may be having second thoughts that may bring it to accede to Israel's conditions. The mobilization and training of reserve forces is meant to prepare for another potential phase of fighting, without promising either the world or the Israeli public that this phase is indeed necessary and therefore must be implemented. Nevertheless, it would be better for both sides not to reach this stage.

The cabinet and IDF General Staff must discuss ending the operation before it becomes pointlessly bogged down. Achieving the optimal result - a long-term, stable cease-fire with no rockets launched either from or at Gaza - will require a clear-headed evaluation of the operation's progress and a serious examination of the various diplomatic proposals now on the table.

The danger for Israel at this moment is that its forces in Gaza's densely populated urban areas are now treading water, and this might tempt the government to decide to take over additional territory. That would result in more casualties - both for the IDF and Palestinians uninvolved in terror - and even greater distress for Gaza's civilian population, as well as a further collapse of international support for Israel. The more time passes, the more the original justification for the operation will be eroded and forgotten.

Maybe the cowardly Hamas terrorists shouldn't hide in schools

:yeahthat:

the UN is gonna sit there and make BS claims but that's what they do. Maybe the UN should be telling Hamas that if they want to be a legit government and military, they need to have normal locations instead of hiding in civilian areas.

the UN is stupid anyway. they might say that israel had no reason to attack and their claims about hamas terrorists doing stuff there were bogus, but how is it that israel always seems to know where these idiots are located and where all of their weapons are stashed? and why doesn't the UN ever know this stuff and thinks hamas is always out of weapons as they continue shelling israel?

yeah but i'm gonna side with israel intelligence over the UN's every day of the week considering they have the best intelligence agency in the world (which they graciously share with us :yay:)

Too bad the UN liars can't explain away the bodies.

Hamas Operatives Killed in UNRWA School

After an investigation that took place over the past hour it has been found that amongst the dead at the Jabalya school were Hamas terror operatives and a mortar battery cell who were firing on IDF forces in the area. Hamas operatives Imad Abu Askhar and Hassan Abu Askhar were amongst terrorists that were identified to be killed.

“We face a very delicate situation where the Hamas is using the citizens of Gaza as a protective vest,” IDF Spokesperson Brig. General Avi Benayahu said following the incident.

Anyone here ever fired, or called for mortar fire??

Anyone want to share how accurate they are?

They were doing counterfire/ counterbattery operations. Hamas fired mortars at them, they traced the rounds trajectory and fired (probably before Hamas' rounds hit the ground) a counter volley back to where the rounds originated from. Mortars usually aren't the weapon of choice, artillery is much more accurate, but I'm sure there are MANY reasons for using high angle trajectory mortar rounds in a city.

Now if Hamas was within 100 meters or so of a school firing these rounds (and people have to understand, today that school is nothing more than a building like any other, there are no kids going to school there right now) mortar rounds fire a spread.. and usually fire from a multitude of mortars, rarely do you fire a mortar singularly, but most often in threes.

Israelis bomb two UN schools-40 dead

COuld you make it any more anti-Israel/ anti-semite?

One, if you're in a war zone I doubt you're sending your kids to school.. without kids/ students it's not a school, it's a building.

Two, if you were seeking refuge during a war, why would you pick a place IN the town being attacked, near where the people getting attacked are operating? ANSWER: You had no choice. HAMAS forced you to go there in hopes you would get hurt or killed so they could use your death to their propaganda benefit.

HAMAS is GREAT at propaganda, and propaganda works best against the addle minded.. people that can't think things through, and ask WHY? The stupid and illiterate are their best friends and supporters.. (kind of goes without saying doesn't it?)

Its a win-win situation for Hamas

If the send in mortar fire from a school and the Israeli's dont return fire because of the kids. They have shielded themselves from that fire.

If they send in mortar fire from a school and its is hit by return fire, They get to show the pictures of the bloody walls and dead kids strewn about.

Does Hamas really care about the kids?? Only the fact that they can use them---Dead or Alive.

it's only a win-win because too many people in this world are retarded and don't hold Hamas responsible for the fact that they are using human shields.

Grief and Rage at Stricken Gaza School

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/08/world/middleeast/08scene.html?ref=world

"JABALIYA, Gaza — The bodies of the children who died outside the United Nations school here were laid out in a long row on the ground. Some were wrapped in the vivid green flag of Hamas, some were in white shrouds, and some were in the yellow flag of Fatah, which is rarely seen these days in Hamas-run Gaza.

Hundreds of Gazans crowded around, staring at the little faces, some of them with dark eyes still open, but dulled.

Abdel Minaim Hasan, 37, knelt, weeping, next to the body of his eldest daughter, Lina, 11, who was wrapped in a Hamas flag. “From now on I am Hamas!” he cried. “I choose resistance!” But then he cursed Arab nations for ignoring the plight of the Gazans. “The Arabs are doing nothing to protect us!” he shouted.

The streets were crowded Tuesday evening when the mortar shells struck, Mr. Hasan said. “We were in a United Nations school, we were so far from the tanks.” There were many children around, and he gave Lina a shekel to run to a nearby grocery store. She was hit by shrapnel and died.

Some 280 families — 1,674 people — had been seeking shelter inside the school, Al Fakhura, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which helps Palestinian refugees and their descendants and which runs the school. Most came from farther north in Gaza, near Beit Lahiya, where the fighting has been intense, an hour’s walk away. Israeli forces ordered them to evacuate their homes for their own safety."

UN: IDF officers say no gun fire from school.....

UN: IDF officers admitted there was no gunfire from Gaza school which was shelled - Haaretz - Israel News

"The United Nations is claiming Israeli military officers have admitted there was no Palestinian gunfire emanating from inside an UNRWA school in Gaza which was shelled by an IDF tank.

Dozens of Palestinians were killed in the shelling.

In addition, UNRWA Thursday announced it will cease activities in the Strip due to the death of an UNRWA staffer in an IDF shelling during Thursday morning's humanitarian hiatus.

UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness told Haaretz yesterday that the army had conceded wrongdoing.

"In briefings senior [Israel Defense Forces] officers conducted for foreign diplomats, they admitted the shelling to which IDF forces in Jabalya were responding did not originate from the school," Gunness said. "The IDF admitted in that briefing that the attack on the UN site was unintentional."

The UN couldn't find it's own collective ass with both hands and a flashlight, even with directions.

Too bad, too, because they've been taking it up the dirt road from so many terrorist and terrorist-sponsoring members for so long that they are in no way anal retentive. I just wish they'd quit flinging it about like monkeys in the zoo.

Wonder if we could get Israel to bomb the UN for us?
