Environmental Defense Action Fund Announces Winners in Online Climate Change Contests

(Washington, DC – February 5, 2009) Today Environmental Defense Action Fund announced the winners of an ad competition challenging filmmakers to explain how capping greenhouse gas pollution will break America’s addiction to oil. Two winners were selected, one chosen by EDAF staff and one by thousands of online voters.

The winner of the Carbon Cap Competition, as selected by EDAF, is Susan Emshwiller from Los Angeles, California. Her video, Cursing Cap, shows that our addiction to oil is like a bad cursing habit: Cap it, and you'll tap it. She will receive a professional fee of $10,000.

The winner of the Climate Activist’s Choice Award, selected by an online vote, is Scott Canney from Adel, Iowa. Scott’s video, Thinking Cap shows that a carbon cap is really a thinking cap- it helps keep money here at home. The prize was $1,000.

The following submissions, all finalists in the Climate Activist’s Choice Award, came in second place in the Carbon Cap Competition:

·Carbon Limit by Leah Raeder from Chicago, IL, illustrates that a carbon cap is like a speed sign: it keeps us from going over the limit.
·Get off the Couch by Devon Gundry from Nashville, TN, asks: You know that friend who stayed on your couch for free? What if they had to pay?
·Goldfish by John Hill from Orlando, FL, explains that a goldfish will eat until it bursts- it's a lot like America's oil addiction.

For every 100 votes that were cast, EDAF bought 100 pounds of carbon from IdleAire, Inc.-an innovative solution that allows truck drivers to connect to the power grid, so they don’t idle their engines.

EDAF will buy 8,520 pounds of carbon from IdleAire, Inc.

“This competition was a great way to help us think about how to communicate a complex issue like a carbon cap to the American people,” said Keith Gaby, director of communications for the National Climate Campaign at EDAF. “In the end, we were not only able to get great ideas, but we were also able to see what resonates with the public.”
