"CHARLESTON, W.Va.--A Charleston teenager was sentenced to life without mercy for the killing of an unborn baby in a convenience store shooting last November.

Kelly Juwan Chapman, 16, was also sentenced to another three to 15 years in prison for the attempted murder of the mother. The ninth-grader accepted a plea deal from prosecutors in May.

It is the first time a person has been convicted and sentenced in the death of a fetus in Kanawha County. West Virginia joined a majority of the states with such laws when it passed the Unborn Victims of Violence Act in 2005.

Chapman will spend the next two years at the Industrial Home for Boys at Salem. When he turns 18, Kanawha Circuit Judge Duke Bloom will reconsider his sentence."
