"WASHINGTON (AP) — Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was hospitalized Thursday after becoming ill in her office at the Supreme Court.

A statement from the court said that Justice Ginsburg, 76, was taken to Washington Hospital Center as a precaution.

The statement said that she had received treatment earlier in the day for an iron deficiency that was discovered in July.

About an hour after the treatment Thursday, Justice Ginsburg “developed lightheadedness and fatigue,” the statement said. She was found to have a slightly low blood pressure, which the court said can occur after the type of treatment she received.

Although an examination found her to be in stable condition, she was taken to the hospital as a precaution, the court said.

She underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in February but returned to work quickly.

The July evaluation found “that she was in completely normal health with the exception of a low red blood cell count caused by deficiency of iron,” the court statement said."

Why dont people like Justice Ginsberg and Sen. Robert Byrd who are in ill health and can no longer do their job in a proper manner just retire.

Is their ego so large that they just cannot bring themselves to go into retirement?

Kennedy stayed in the Senate until he died. Why? No person is so important that they cannot be replaced.

I would much prefer she remain on the court another three years, four months and 20 days. OK?

Your point may be relevant with regard to Senator Byrd, but I don't really think it is with regard to Justice Ginsberg. She was diagnosed with and received treatment for pancreatic cancer not too long ago, but she doesn't seem to have been in persistently bad health since - at least not to the extent that it has significantly limited her ability to do her job.

Perhaps she will get sick in a way that affects her ability to do her job, and if she does, then she will have to make a decision about leaving the high Court. But, as of now, I don't think that is the situation - and needing to go to the hospital this time certainly doesn't, in itself, indicate that it is.
