JACKSONVILLE, North Carolina - Authorities say they are charging a North Carolina woman who slept as a pit bull chewed the toes off her 4-month-old baby's left foot.

The Onslow County Sheriff's Office said Monday that the child's mother, Robie Lynn Jenkins, and her boyfriend, Tremayne Spillman, will be charged with felony child abuse.

Deputies say the couple were dog-sitting the 1-year-old pit bull for a friend who had been arrested on gun charges.

According to the Onslow County Sheriff's Office both Jenkins and Spillman were asleep inside their motor home residence with their baby on a fold-out couch when a pit bull puppy chewed the toes off the child's left foot.

Investigators say Jenkins told them she had been on medication at the time and never heard the child's screams. She discovered the injuries when she went to change the baby's diaper the next morning. Spillman was reportedly sleeping in an adjoining room and offered no reason for not hearing the child.

Authorities are now performing drug screens on the couple to determine exactly what kind of "medication" Jenkins was on. (meth? marijuana?).

"It probably was going on for hours, and it's screaming probably went on for hours," said Sheriff Ed Brown of the Onslow Sheriff's Office.
