I see them down here on their rides on these 7th District roads like Oakley Road and I wonder where their brains are. It's a windy road that the State hasnt repaired or fixed for years, deep ditches, blind curves, Holes in the road. They arent satisfied to ride on these dangerous roads single file, They want to speak to each other as they ride. I am really surprised more of them dont get killed.

I just love the fact that they have a nice wide shoulder (most times paved) and they're white-lining, causing me to pull to the left to give them a wide berth in case the knuckle heads swing into the traffic lane. Full use of horn - OBTW!

For a little perspective, Drive On sought out Jeff Peel, a program specialist heading the League of American Bicycle's campaign for Bicycle Friendly Communities. His contention is that the road is "not motorist space. It's people space." Bicyclists are road users too, even if they travel at the fraction of the speed of a car. In fact, he says, that's good.

People Space ... that is the sidewalks ....

Share the road.

Maryland says that they have rights -
§ 21-1202. Traffic laws apply to bicycles and motor scooters.

Every person operating a bicycle or a motor scooter in a public bicycle area has all the rights granted to and is subject to all the duties required of the driver of a vehicle by this title, including the duties set forth in § 21-504 of this title, except:

(1) As otherwise provided in this subtitle; and

(2) For those provisions of this title that by their very nature cannot apply.

§ 21-101. Definitions.

(o) Public bicycle area.- "Public bicycle area" means any highway, bicycle path, or other facility or area maintained by this State, a political subdivision of this State, or any of their agencies for the use of bicycles.
The state also says -
§21–1205.

(a) Each person operating a bicycle or a motor scooter at a speed less than the speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing on a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable and safe, except when:

(1) Making or attempting to make a left turn;
(2) Operating on a one-way street;
(3) Passing a stopped or slower moving vehicle;
(4) Avoiding pedestrians or road hazards;
(5) The right lane is a right turn only lane; or
(6) Operating in a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle or motor scooter and another vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.

(b) Each person operating a bicycle or a motor scooter on a roadway may ride two abreast only if the flow of traffic is unimpeded.

(c) Each person operating a bicycle or a motor scooter on a roadway shall exercise due care when passing a vehicle.

(d) Each person operating a bicycle or a motor scooter on a roadway may walk the bicycle or motor scooter on the right side of a highway if there is no sidewalk.

The day of Allie Raley's funeral there were a bunch of them down here riding 4 wide taking up the entire lane, and WOULD NOT move over.

Well we all know that MD is effed up as a football bat.

If you hate MD laws so bad why do you still live here?

I'm sure the majority of bikers own cars as well... unless you're talking about the ones that don't do it for sport and just for transportation. They don't even bother to wear light colors at night when riding. I just love coming up on them on the dark stretch of 235 near my home, I often wonder if they have a death wish.

I was born, raised and work here, that's why. I'm not going to move over a stupid bicycle law. I doubt I'll retire here.

I don't give a rats ass if they own cars. If they're going to ride bikes on the road and make it hazardous for themselves and cars then they should have to register the bike and pay taxes.

And MD is effed up for many more reasons than their stupid laws.

At night or when visibility is less then a 1000 feet they are required to have a white light visible for 500 feet to the front and a red reflector visible for 600 feet to 100 feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful upper beams of head lamps on a motor vehicle. You should report them as a hazard.

Sweet, Im going to ride my bike over the bridge during rush hour traffic...

When you do, please put the kiddie seat on and take your youngest. I am still shaking my head at the stupidity of the cyclist that I saw doing that! Being right does not necessarily mean being smart!
