Cage Distributions are Scheduled
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So far it's been a great year for the CCA oyster project. We've collected all of the cages that we distributed last year from almost 250 households, and placed the oysters on protected sites in the Patuxent. In total there were about 350,000 1-3" oysters that will continue to grow, hopefully reproduce, and each filter up to 50 gallons of water a day. Together, we are making a difference in water quality and creating fish habitat in our river!

Now it's time to redistribute the cages with a fresh batch of spat on shell. Those who have been growing oysters, and wish to continue, will be contacted by their “Creek Captains” with information on the local distributions taking place in August and September. Each cage will receive a new rope that should last for another season, and we will be placing ½ the amount of spat on shell in each cage to reduce the amount of weight and prevent overcrowding in cages.

For those who are interested in joining this highly successful project, we’ll have additional cages. We're looking for new growers who want to take care of cages. If you live or keep your boat downstream of Battle Creek in Calvert County or Cat Creek in St. Mary's County, and would like to participate, please contact Scott McGuire (smcguire20653@gmail.com). You will receive information for the cage distribution nearest your home. Each participant will recieve 4 oysters cages when they join CCA MD ($25).

If your friends or neighbors have expressed interest in growing oysters, please extend an invitation for them to join. They can join CCA and receive cages and spat on our distribution days.

Don’t delay – a limited number of cages area available.
