Health Insurance?

If a corporate plan were no longer an option, what would be a good choice for a single male with a dependant son?
So far AETNA's PPO plan looks like the best bet

Check into CareFirst's HDHPs. They make you eligible to open an HSA so all of your "out of pocket" costs are tax free and there's no "use or loose" at the end of the year.

A PPO plan will cost more than say an HMO. If you're fairly healthy (and boy) and don't visit the doctor often, there's really no reason you need a fancy plan. Look into an HSA as an option.

A word of advice: Stay as far away from Aetna as you can. Don't take my word for it..check a couple health care providers and see if they will even accept Aetna insurance.

Happiest day of my life was when I got rid of Aetna....

If you do go to the DOCs a lot (you and boy) and you don't mind having to get referals, and you don't need "out of network" DOCs (ie. when on travel), then HMOs are a good bet. Their premiums are lower and co-pays are lower and there's ussually no deductables.

Aps, I have Aetna through work and it blows. The provider I wanted to see wont accept it under any circumstances, problem is alot of practices don't take Aetna, too much of a PIA to deal with is what I was told.

I take it you're celebrating that AWESOME email this morning?

Just wait for Obamacare to kick in. Our rates should be going down any day now..... :tap:

 I have till the end of the month to use up 100 hours of sick leave, so I didn't see an e-mail this morning.

Remember how we had good coverage a few years ago, then it got worse, then went to hell last year?

Bohica. Last year was GREAT compared to what we're getting this year.

Seriously, CareFirst is $110 per month for an individual policy. Are you responsible for insuring the boy?

Good to know about the $110 per/mo. rate. for myself. I need to get Health Ins. Now... does anyone buy prescription drugs from Canada? I need to know. I have to take Synthroid... been taking it for 30 yrs. for hypothyroidism. I saw some cheap prices. Is it safe?

You can't bank on get a $110 per/mo. rate from a private insurance when you have pre-existing conditions. Heck, my mom didn't have pre-existing conditions and couldn't get anywhere near that rate because of her age... 60 at the time.

To get a lower premium, you normally have to go for a higher deductable which is why you should look at the high deductable plans that qualify you to open an HSA.

uh oh - that's the PPO plan I'm considering so I can dump my HMO ..... the HMO is limiting and requires I use specified radiology centers which is annoying, and of course you have to get referrals to get specialist care, but in looking at a comparison of the 2 plans, I would spend more money with the PPO for surgical procedures paying 20% of the cost (after deductible). Yikes 20% of a surgery cost can be a LOT. I may end up sticking with my HMO after all?

For whatever its worth...I have my 13 year old son under Assurant. Very good coverage for very reasonable cost and I've only gotten smiles from the office staff when I present the card. You want to see someone in the doctor's office scowl or even get downright snippy in a NY second, show them an Aetna card.
