It's nothing new
During the last mayoral election in Philadelphia the head of one of the trade unions (aligned with the democratic party) made a point to go to republican ralies in order to make intimidating gestures (threats) to the candidate and his family.
Lest you think they are partisan, they used stroing arm tactics to control the nominations on the democratic ticket. Bullying out of the race people who were not in their favor.

Because they support the party of the people!
The republicans were asses when they supported campaing reform. While they moved to limit individual and corporate contributions without similiar controls on unions.
