"To the Editor:

"It has recently come to my attention that Mr. Richard Fritz, a candidate for Circuit Court Judge, has used a picture of a St. Mary’s County Deputy, in uniform, beside a marked patrol car in his campaign brochure. It is against Sheriff’s Office policy for deputies to use their position in the agency to endorse political candidates."

"Mr. Fritz never obtained permission from me, as the Sheriff, or from the deputy who is pictured to use the image (uniform and vehicle) of the Sheriff’s Office to further his political campaign. I told the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office, after I was sworn in, that the politics were over and we must move on with our mission of protecting the citizens of St. Mary’s County. When Mr. Fritz published his brochure with this picture, it just made it that much more difficult to remove politics from the Sheriff’s Office."

"The Sheriff must work with whichever candidate is elected to the position of Circuit Court Judge as well as the State’s Attorney. I felt compelled to publicly address this situation by stating that the picture in no way means that I am supporting Mr. Fritz for Circuit Court Judge. I wish each candidate the best of luck."

Good on Sheriff Zylack..... covering his own A....

Congressman Hoyer did something similar and was called out on it too... will it make a difference in either case???? Probably not.

Maryland state's attorney candidate's partner sentenced

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BALTIMORE, MD -- Daniel J. Brown received a far harsher sentence than expected last week on charges stemming from his relationship with John A. Mattingly Jr., a candidate for St. Mary’s County state’s attorney.

Daniel Brown, who was hoping for a six-month sentence with work-release privileges, instead drew a 10-year prison term with all but two years suspended for the misdemeanor of conspiring to unlawfully affix a public seal to a deed. He will serve an additional six months in jail for conspiring to influence a witness to a 2007 shooting incident involving one of Mattingly’s clients.

In imposing the sentence in St. Mary’s County Circuit Court, Judge Sean Wallace ignored the recommendation of the prosecutors, who sought the six-month term pursuant to a plea deal in the notary case. Wallace accused Brown and Mattingly of corrupt business practices.

Isabel M. Cumming, the Prince George’s County state’s attorney brought in to handle the cases because Mattingly is running against the incumbent state’s attorney in St. Mary’s, said the judge was “fair.”
“We were bound to our plea agreement with what we offered,” she said. “The judge did give a stronger sentence. It does happen. Judge Wallace is a good judge.”

John Mattingly and Daniel Brown were both charged in the land-transfer case, and with a conspiracy to influence witnesses in the second case.

“I frankly don't think you were the instigator in any of these things, but you played a major role,” the visiting Prince George’s County judge said to Brown, according to The Enterprise, a Southern Maryland newspaper. “The two of you together did operate your business corruptly in an effort to cheat other people.”

Sisters keep property

Daniel Brown’s false-seal conviction resulted from a land deal with three Baltimore sisters, in which he was convicted of asking his sister-in-law to notarize a deed she had not witnessed. The sisters will keep their interest in the property, Cumming has said.

The witness-tampering charge stemmed from an incident involving one of Mattingly’s former clients, Terry Clarke, who had been charged with first-degree assault and illegal gun possession after shooting at people near his property line. Mattingly was accused of telling Clarke and Brown to pay off the victim witnesses.

Brown entered an Alford plea to that count, acknowledging that prosecutors had sufficient evidence to convict him. However, he told the court that the only person he ever spoke to about the case was Clarke.

In addition, Brown will serve a concurrent 30-day sentence from a guilty plea for doing home improvement work without a license. Brown will repay $30,000 to the deceased homeowner’s heirs.

After serving his time, he will undergo five years of supervised probation.

Do you remember the name of the Stet Docket king lawyer who ran for a judgeship in 06 and got his azz handed to him? You know, the one who regularly gets his drug dealer clients fritzed.I hear one of his clients is looking for better repesentation because Stet esq. screwed up his plea deal.
In other news. Word on the street is that the nephew of another leonardtown Stet specialist screwed up bad enough this time for the cost of his Fritz to go up to $35K. Guess they can afford it.

Ken, why did you support Fritz the first time around? Why did you help him get elected? Why didn't you start attacking until he had already won the office?

Weren't you aware of his past when you first supported him? Didn't you do your homework? Isn't that your responsibility as a "journalist?"

Excuse me while I laugh at the thought of calling you a journalist. It's kind of like calling you a businessman or a decent human being.

Back to the topic, did you just ignore his past when it suited your hateful agenda?

Why should we believe a word you say when you flip-flop more than the carreer politicians do?

Hey AB,
Do you know what the term thrown under the bus means? From the look of it I'd have to say the answer is no. It means you're going to sacrifice someone that trusts you, make them a scapegoat. Do you get that from this opinion letter? Why don't you go back and reword your drivel and try again.

So Dave Zylak, the guy who is a one termer, lost to Cameron, and you want Cameron to take a lesson from Zylak. Don't you remember Ken? Cameron is the first Sheriff in over 75 years to be running unopposed. I think i'll take Cameron's advise.

Cambuffoon?

The same guy that threw Cindy Jones under the bus and told the Enterprise that "he doesn't endorse candidates; that's not his job" when she mentioned him in a campaign ad as supporting her.

Then he went on to endorse Fritz.

He lost any respect I had for him at that moment.

I am impressed that ST. Mary's Sheriff's Office has a policy regarding politics on duty. In Calvert, Sheriff Evans is seen all over town using his official Sheriff's office vehicle to put up and move campaign signs around. He is also seen hawking the mothers picking up their children from daycare. I know now why crime is up and there is a serious mismanagement problem within Calvert Sheriff's office, the Sheriff is out conducting political business and neglecting the management of his office. Most departments have a strict policy on politics while on duty and I applaud you for that. Policies like youre's seperate a professional agency from a potentially corrupt one.
