Presidential Campaign Fundraising

I heard a stat on some news program the other night that since the early 70's the candidate who raises the most money has won the election.

I did about three hours of research last night on the net to see if I could verify this fact and I couldn't find anything to support or refute it. In fact, I couldn't a nice compilation of statistics that covered the time period before 1996.

My inability to find this data leads me to believer that either 1. There are no compilations like this, and/or 2. The government is suppressing this data.

Could someone help me here? Thanks in advance.

I found data back through 1984 that doesn't quite support that assertion. http://www.fec.gov/finance/prsoffm5.htm

In 1996 both Forbes and Dole had more funds available and spent more then Clinton.

In 1992 Bush the first had and spent more then Clinton.

In 1988 Bush raised more but Robertson spent more.

In 1984 Reagan raised more but was outspent by Glenn, Hart, and Mondale.

These are only through April of the election year so I guess maybe there was considerable raising and spending after the primaries, but they don't seem to talk to that.

Thanks for the help Ken...

I was actually on that page last night and didn't realize to scroll down.

Why do you suppose this data can't be found?? I wish I knew which newscast I saw that on.
