Last known survivor of 1915 Lusitania disaster has died

"Audrey Lawson-Johnston, who died on Tuesday aged 95, was the last known survivor of the Lusitania disaster of May 1915, when the Cunarder was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat en route from New York to Queenstown (now Cobh) in southern Ireland.

he fourth of six children of a surgeon major in the American army, she was born Audrey Warren Pearl on February 5 1915. Shortly after her birth, her father was instructed to report to the American Embassy in London and she was three months old when she boarded the Lusitania in New York with her parents, three siblings and two nursemaids.

At about 2.15pm on Friday May 7, Audrey's father, Warren Pearl, was in his stateroom when he heard an explosion coming from the opposite side of the ship. Within moments flames, smoke, and splintering glass from the portholes blew into the room. Audrey's mother Amy was on deck and had seen the torpedo travelling through the water before it struck. The next thing she knew, she was thrown back towards the cabins."
