Maryland House & Garden Pilgrimage

Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage

Each year the Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage coordinates a multi-county spring tour that gives visitors an inside look at extraordinary historic and contemporary sites. The tours are a central component of the organization’s efforts to cultivate awareness of Maryland’s rich architectural and cultural heritage. Calvert County is featured in the 2011 tour with proceeds benefitting the American Chestnut Land Trust.

Pack a picnic and spend the day discovering how colonial children and families spent their leisure time. Make a rag doll, clay marbles and a whirly gig. Celebrate Southern Maryland traditions and taste traditional foods, learn how to pick crabs and shuck oysters like the pros, enjoy local gospel and old-time music, see world-class waterfowl carving and Chesapeake Bay Retriever trials in action, watch model boats skim the waters of the boat basin and talk with traditional crafts people as they demonstrate their skills. The juried show features some of the best artisans from Calvert, St. Mary’s and Charles counties. Included will be Calvert County’s five wineries: Cove Point, Solomons Island, Friday’s Creek, Perigeaux and Running Hare. Guests wishing to taste the wines can purchase a commemorative wine glass for $12. Musicians, dancers, children’s activities, baked goods and other great food add to the festivities. Tours will be available of this historic 1692 church and its labyrinth.

Eighth Annual Inspiration 5K Run/Walk for Special Olympics of Calvert County

Hosted by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Team, this annual event raises much-needed funds to support year-round sports training and competition for intellectually disabled youth and adults in Calvert County. Registration begins at 9 a.m.; run/walk starts at 10 a.m. in front of the Calvert Marine Museum. All participants who pledge at least $25 receive a T-shirt.
