BEE for Literacy Set for Friday, May 6

The Calvert County Literacy Council, Inc. will hold its 15th annual BEE for Literacy, Friday, May 6, at Tom Wisner Hall, Kings Landing Park, Huntingtown. Susan Shaw, president, Calvert County Board of County Commissioners, is Honorary Chair of the event

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a silent auction, followed by the adult spelling bee at 7 p.m. A light buffet and cash bar will be available all evening. Local jazz vocalist Joyce Kinser performs from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Tickets for the BEE are $30 per person and are on sale at all Calvert Library branches, the Calvert County Literacy Council (65 Duke St., Suite 208, Prince Frederick), or at the door the evening of the event.

The Leatherheads from Second Looks Books in Prince Frederick, champion spellers of the 2010 BEE, will be vying for a back-to-back championship title.

The Calvert County Literacy Council--a volunteer-based, nonprofit organization--provides free, one-on-one tutoring for Calvert County residents 18 years and older in basic literacy (reading, writing, and math), English as A Second Language, GED preparation, AFQT preparation, workplace skills, and opportunities for personal life skills development (shopping, banking, computers and smart technology) through targeted partnerships.
