Boys and Girls club closing?

Anyone hear of the closing of the southern Maryland Boys and Girls club, due to the lack of funds to keep them running?

They sent out the announcement last week. The proximate cause was the lack of funds. They also have some outstanding debts.

In reality, their burn rate on their funding was incredible and they've done very little fund raising since Chris Giggy left to do other things.

North Beach now has an empty $2M building sitting there that the Town built for the Club.

Hopefully they'll be able to get the Y or County to bring in some programs.

That is a shame, the new club had some potential. Wonder if North Beach will run it as a Rec Center now?

If anything Calvert County Parks and Rec will move into it. The current NB Community Center is getting leased to the Town for the museum with the current museum building being sold. That arrangement had Parks and Rec moving programs over to the B and G building since their programs were only 3hours/day and the building was closed the rest of the time. That would give Parks and Rec a new facility to expand programs in NB.

There aren't any civic organizations (Lion's, Rotary or Optimist) over there to work on fund raising?

There are, in fact the ones you named, but the BandG Clubs of Southern MD liked to go it alone.

Remember, it's not just the North Beach club that's closing but also the facility in/near CRE and the one in St. Mary's County. all the same organization.

In fact, CRE was where the idea for a club originated back in the 90's. North Beach got it because the Town government was able to tap into County/State/Federal grant funding to build the building whle CRE had no standing for those things and Calvert County wasn't much interested.

In addition to the grants Calvert County kicked in around $300K, the state threw in as did the Feds. North Beach built the building and the Town's taxpayers are on the hook for around a $250K mortgage on it.
