Clipping/Trimming A Cushings Horse

I have an 18-year old Cushings horse who has shed the curly coat, but still has a very thick coat. He is on Pergolide and Metabolize daily; and can come in or go out his stall (with fan) whenever he wants (on dry lot w/hay and CarbGuard). Does anyone know how I can make him more comfortable this summer without flies biting him to death? Is there a special trim to help cool him without making him fly-bait? He won't keep a fly-sheet on. Thanks.

We clipped our cushings pony 2x during the hotter months. The first clipping we did her whole body, the next we did just her body no legs or head. If she needed another trim we did kind of a trace clip.
