Volunteers Needed to Draft New Charter for Charles County Government

The Charles County Commissioners are seeking county residents to fill vacancies on the Charter Board established in December 2012. Members of this board can have a direct impact on the structure of our county government for decades to come.

The Charter Board has nine citizen member vacancies. The County Commissioners continue to receive applications, and have established an application deadline of Tuesday, Feb. 5.

The Charter Board will draft a charter for Charles County to change the present form of government from code home rule to charter government. The draft charter will be submitted to the County Commissioners for review and approval, and then for a referendum election by the voters of Charles County. The proposed charter is intended to go before the voters for ratification during the 2014 Election.

The proposed charter government document will define the duties, powers, rules, procedures and structure of local county government and the rights of our citizens. The proposal will be submitted to the County Commissioners by Jan. 1, 2014.

The first meeting of the Charter Board is Thursday, Feb. 21. The board will meet weekly.

Applications are available at www.CharlesCountyMD.gov or by contacting Ms. Carol DeSoto at 301-645-0691 or DeSotoC@CharlesCounty.org.
