The Newtowne Players will perform The Lion in Winter by James Goldman Thursdays through Sundays, March 8-24, 2013. The play focuses on Henry II, the Plantagenet king who rules half of Western Europe, during the Christmas season of 1183. Henry has three sons by Eleanor of Aquitaine. While Henry wants the kingdom to stay united after his death, all three sons want to rule, and it is likely to be torn apart by revolution. Henry favors one son, while Eleanor favors another. This spectacularly dysfunctional family’s plotting and counter plotting makes The Lion in Winter a riveting drama leavened by a healthy dose of humor.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances start at 8 p.m.; Sunday shows begin at 3:30 p.m. Performances are held at Three Notch Theatre on 21744 South Coral Drive in Lexington Park.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students, senior citizens (age 65+) and the military. Thursday shows are $10 general admission. Some material may not be suitable for children. Light refreshments and beverages are available for purchase at the theatre.
Opening weekend, March 8-9, will feature two special events. On March 8, enjoy free tastings of local wines from Port of Leonardtown Winery starting at 7 p.m. On March 9, listen to the sounds of musicians from the Celtic Society of Southern Maryland at 7:30 p.m.
The theatre will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, by offering each patron who wears green a free snack from the concession stand. Limit one per customer.
