The Guards Mock Jesus

Luke 22:63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.
Jesus Before Pilate and Herod

Luke 22:66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”

Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”

70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”

He replied, “You say that I am.”

71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”

The game of blind mans bluff really gets me. The guards are the ones who really have been blinded. They beat Him. He allowed Himself to be beaten and mocked by these Roman idiots.

IMHO Luke doesn't go into the detail about the trial as Matthew and Mark. There are a few facts here though that I found interesting. This is not a small group of people. I read that there were 71 people all together at the trial in the morning. That includes the Sadducees, Pharisees, and Chief Priests.

It's the same group He had been arguing with for days now. Jesus brought up the discussion He had with them concerning John the Baptist. Remember, He asked them who John the Baptist was and they were afraid to answer because the people would have revolted regardless of their answer. They were afraid of the truth.

When Jesus said "from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God" He is claiming to be able to go directly into God's presence and rule at God's side from heaven. This is bigger than being able to just walk right into the Holy of Holies which was reserved for only the highest of their authorities.

I've read that when they went into the Holy of Holies, they had to wear a rope around their waste in case they made a mistake, getting put to death in the Holy of Holies. The rope was there so the others could drag their body out. Not everyone could go into the Holy of Holies. I've read it was not a crime to claim to be the Messiah but it was a huge crime to claim to be able to go into the Holy of Holies untethered.

Jesus is saying that not only can He go into the Holy of Holies.... He can go in untethered and live their. That got to them. He's saying He's better than them.

I'm really glad there was no court TV at the time. I'd hate to think what Nancy Grace and the others would say during this trial.
