The Death of Jesus

Luke 23:44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[e] When he had said this, he breathed his last.

47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

The Olympics were first held in 776 B.C. and were continued ever four years until they were stopped in 393 A.D. not to return for nearly 1,200 years. This tells us the 202nd Olympics were held in the year 32 A.D. very near to the time of Jesus' crucifixion. Why are the Olympics import? Roman historian Phlegon recorded events concerning the 202 Olympiads. In his text he recorded a full eclipse of the sun at the sixth hour, which turned the day to night. A strange coincidence, or external confirmation of the bible?

The curtain in the Temple was put there to divide the Holy of Holies from the common area. Only the Chief Priest could enter the Holy of Holies. Everyone else did sacrifices in the outer court. The curtain was about 60' tall and 4" thick. The curtain was constructed of blue, purple and scarlet material and fine twisted linen. According to Josephus, the curtain was so thick that horses tied to each side could not pull the veil apart.

We've seen a lot of women beating their chests lately. It's been on the nightly news when war takes lives or when crime takes loved ones. These women were devastated. These women had followed Jesus since Galilee. It's obvious they adored Him. Now they were devastated. As usual.... women were at a distance.... after all it was the men who were counted at the feeding of the thousands and it was men who would have led Jesus to Pilate and Herod. The women would have had no say in the matter. It was men who cast lots and ridiculed Him. Women had to stand aside and watch helplessly in despair.

Throughout Yom Kippur a Jew pounds his chest as he confesses his sins before his Creator on the day when his judgment is sealed. Once right before the Fast Day begins, and five times throughout the night and day of Yom Kippur, the Jew recites his long list of sins, each of which is accompanied by a fist striking at the heart
