Why Isn't SoMd Doing This?

I think, as BG brought up in a recent tread, So MD would have a much better chance at secession, or at least breaking away and attaching ourselves to VA.

Conservative group wants liberation for western Maryland - Baltimore Sun

...a group of conservative Republicans want Garrett and four other Maryland counties to break away and form the 51st state so they can live happily ever after.

I spoke Monday to the leader of what's called the Western Maryland Initiative. Scott Strzelczyk is his name. He doesn't like the word "secession." He's talking about something different — the formation of a new state out of five counties. The U.S. Constitution allows regions to separate with approval from the state legislature and Congress. There are similar efforts around the country. West Virginia is the last state to successfully break away from another, and that was 150 years ago.

That's what Strzelczyk has in mind.

He no longer wants to be part of the Maryland associated with Prince Georges County, Baltimore City and Montgomery County. Being a Republican, he's miserable. The Democrats control the Maryland General Assembly, hold all statewide offices and, he says, gerrymandered legislative and Congressional districts. The state has only one Republican member of Congress, Andy Harris.

what an idiotic idea...if you hate it that much...move.

There are 49 other states...Wikipedia lists 3007 counties and 137 county equivalents...you are free to move to any of them.

I bet the same dumbasses that come up with these secession petitions tell immigrants or minorities that if they don't like it here, if they feel oppressed or if they can't speak the language that they should just move.

So the dumbass petitioners should take their own advice...don't like the situation...move.

We're way too small to secede and I can't think of any logical reason why VA would ever want us, other than because they'd get rights to some of the Potomac and could crab a little.

So really they'd be using us for our crabs. :ohwell:

I agree with Tommyjo. Moving is what my wife and I will do as soon as we can after she retires. We are so done with Maryland.

Im sorry, why should an American citizen have to move to make way for some filthy unwashed POS that snuck across the border?
How about you and your nasty illegals move back where you all belong.

Why should I have to move? Other than the politics, I love it here.

Isn't it an American founding principle to change things that don't make sense? Or fight back if you feel you aren't being represented properly?

Of course the entire ideal of the American Revolution is probably stupid to you too.

The problem is that a large percentage of the population is not only not being represented and they are making sure they stay unrepresented with the ridiculous district lines.

I was here first. You want your liberal/progessive IDIOTIC BS take it somewhere else.

Oh wow, you were here first? I didn't realize you're a Native American. That's pretty cool. Do you have all of the tribal garb? Is there an indian reservation around here? I hope you guys have a good casino or two.

I was wondering how old he was. Maryland has been notoriously liberal-leaning for a very long time now. In fact, it hasn't been until recent years that certain areas now lean conservative. So with that in mind, the conservatives are the newbs.

I agree with puggymom, the districts and continued re-districting is ridiculous and it leaves a portion of the Maryland population misrepresented.

This almost as stupid as when Badgirl spouted the same stupidity. I guess birds of a feather and all that.....

Bottom line is, you dont like Maryland, then please leave. You leaving would be a total dream come true to many of us who want to live here and appreciate the state for what it has to offer.

You are just sour puss sore losers. You dont get your way, you throw a fit, and make yourselves look even stupider by coming up with such ideas as this.

Grow up people, take the passifier out of your mouth and deal with the fact that things have changed. If you cant deal with it, or keep up.....then get the hell out !!

Every district is "misrepresented" because depending on how you slice it, you'll always end up with a different majority. I bet there's an apartment complex in DC that wishes they were their own district because they'd vote Republican, even though 97% of DC votes Democrat. It happens everywhere. Nobody is ever happy as long as their party is losing. Then they blame the other guys when their party is winning. So nobody is ever happy, regardless of the situation. So basically, you can either go with anarchy, or deal with it, because no amount of change will ever get you represented to the point where you'd be thrilled unless you're representing yourself.

The problem with that sentiment is the same problem I have when the ultra religious want to ban gay marriage. Is that what our country is about? Where it is okay for the majority to infrige on the rights of the minority. They literally took representation away from a large number of counties in the last election and somehow those populations need to suck it up?

hurts nothing if I don't agree that a same sex living arrangement can be called a marriage.
hurts nothing at all.
