"Former adviser Karl Rove to George W. Bush warned House Republicans that their move to tie defunding ObamaCare to legislation that would fund the government would "strengthen the president while alienating independents."
In an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, Rove declared the strategy was "ill-conceived" and argued voters did not want to see the government shut down over an ObamaCare battle.
"The desire to strike at ObamaCare is praiseworthy. But any strategy to repeal, delay or replace the law must have a credible chance of succeeding or affecting broad public opinion positively," Rove writes.
The Republican strategist goes on to cite polling data from a survey conducted for his conservative political organization Crossroads GPS highlighting the potential danger for Republicans.
According to Rove, independents break 58-30 percent against defunding the Affordable Care Act if it risks even a temporary shutdown of government. "
