Waldorf Craigslist robbers fall for police sting
Group used ads to lure prospective buyers to abandoned houses

After allegedly setting up a Craigslist advertisement as bait for armed robbery, a Waldorf teen is being held as an adult at the Charles County jail.
Daquan Shipale Lawrence, 17, is allegedly one of two people who contacted a man who’d posted on Craigslist in search of a specific off-road motorcycle to say he had the bike available for sale, according to a police report. The victim was asked to bring $550 to buy the bike to a Waldorf address.
When the victim arrived at the address June 4 with another person, according to the report, he noticed the home looked vacant. Two men came up and asked if they were there for the bike, according to the report, which the victim confirmed. The suspects then allegedly told the victim they needed help wheeling the bike out and asked him to come around back. Once back there, three masked men allegedly pushed the victim down, and one pointed a gun at his head. The gang took his iPhone after the victim gave them the $550.
When the victim’s girlfriend said she was going to call the police, one of the alleged assailants tried to steal her phone. She instead kicked him, and the pair were able to escape.
The next day, a witness contacted the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and said he was a friend of the victim and that he had also posted on Craigslist in search of the same motorcycle, according to the report. The police learned that the witness had been contacted from the same phone number as the victim, and so worked with officers to have them meet up with $1,200.
An undercover detective came to the residence, where a man met him and asked if he was there for the bike, according to the report. The officer noticed the suspect had his hand “in his waistband area” as they walked around back. The officer placed him under arrest, and as additional officers moved to the back, they saw Lawrence allegedly jump a fence and flee. After being chased on foot, Lawrence was caught.
From there, officers allegedly found a sawed-off shotgun in the backyard. The motorcycle was not there.
Lawrence is charged with first- and second-degree assault, along with theft, armed robbery and weapons charges. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
