.....and mind-numbingly stupid. Apparently they didn't realize that, to whales, kayaker's are like bath toys.

Hmmm, I dont know, given whales apparent odd awareness of and concern for humans, I don't think they were in real danger. The whale appeared to take pains to be gentle. and they were certainly not endangering the whale in anyway. would I get that close, no, but I wouldnt feel in fear for my life were I to end up that close.
