"Man himself can't simply make worship"

I'd love to be intelligent here. I tried to read the article. I got through to the picture of the golden calf and read a quote below it.

There were a couple of ideas that came to mind. One was "what were they thinking?". The next was.... Oh yeah they had been following the smoke by day and the fire by night for a while. They had walked through the river on dry land and the Egyptians were swallowed up.

I guess it was because God was busy teaching Moses the Commandments. The babysitter was busy getting instructions. So they made a gold calf and pretended it was God. I guess they couldn't make fire or smoke.... oh yeah they did have fire or smoke... they used it to melt down the gold...

I think everyone has the instinct to worship. People like to make others happy. Children love to make you laugh. They had just escaped from Egypt and now they were going home. Why on earth would they compare God to a bull calf? I just don't get it....

So they were pretending to worship God? Is that it?
