Is ‘social justice math’ creeping into your child’s curriculum?

“There is a huge movement to push what is known as ‘social justice math,’” he said. “Proponents of social justice math don’t like how much consumerism is in math.”

If you think back to your elementary school years, your math equations probably centered around going to the store and making a purchase or having to make change in some way. Not anymore. Now, progressives are pushing to have themes like climate change and casualties of war worked into these problems.

“A typical math problem would be you have 13 cents and a green pencil is 3 cents – you know, that sort of problem. They want to get rid of those sorts of problems,” Olson said. “Instead, they want to calculate war deaths, or they want to calculate the number of liquor stores within a particular radius of the school, or problems related to global warming – those sorts of things.”

Ultimately, there is a push to insert a political and ideological bias into areas of the curriculum that should be straightforward and fact-based.

LOS ANGELES – To ensure that not a single minute of precious indoctrination time is wasted in the school day, liberal educators have incorporated brainwashing into every course subject, including math.

Math class common coreNext month, the organization, Creating Balance in an Unjust World, will hold its annual conference on “math education and social justice”.

The conference is sponsored by Radical Math, an organization founded by Jonathan Osler, a math and community organizing teacher at a Coalition of Essential Schools high school in Brooklyn, NY.

The Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) is the progressive education reform movement expanded by President Obama and domestic terrorist William Ayers through their work with the Chicago Annenberg Challenge in the 90′s.

As I explained here, Common Core ‘architect’ David Coleman’s Grow Network also worked with Chicago Public Schools, Obama, and Ayers during that time.

Don't know if you watch Pawn Stars on History, but in one episode they were presented with a math published in NC during the Civil War.
That book had a very similar tilt.

Social Justice Math: Who won 2000 election?

Social Justice Math: Investigate how someone who won the most votes did not win the Presidency. How could that happen (actually looks like it's unbiased math problems). But they want the discussion to be about "Is it 'fair' that one person can win the most votes but lose the election?"

When you can relate to the subject being taught, it's easier to grasp the concept. 1 enterprising teacher in Oxon Hill, MD seized on that opportunity with these math word problems. The test got him reassigned, which may have been his goal all along.

The questions included:
"Jose has 2 ounces of cocaine. If he sells an 8 ball to Antonio for $320 and 2 grams to Juan for $85 per gram, what is the street value of the rest of his hold?"

Another example: "Willie gets $200 for a stolen BMW, $150 for stealing a Corvette, and $100 for a 4X4. If he steals 1 BMW, 2 Corvettes, and 3 4X4's, how many more Corvettes must he steal to have $900?"
