Drugs found, arrests made during GMHS lockdown?

So, according to boy, social media reports that over 30 kids were arrested for drugs found during the bag/locker searches for weapons during the recent lockdown. Told that I really doubted 30 kids were taken out in cuffs, he agreed that number seemed silly high. Also talked to another GMHS parent this AM whose kids reported the same number. Anyone have factual data? Were any kids busted, and how does that work legally?

I only have the hearsay of 38, and told some kids were eating their pot to avoid detection.

Since it's a public school I don't suppose it's an illegal search considering the cops were searching for a different and legitimate reason and just happened upon the drugs while doing so?

Heard about the pot eater also.

I heard that the last time they had the Blood Mobile there that 200 kids had HIV.

That's not true, either, but 20 minutes after they start drawing blood that story always goes around.

Not likely true they arrested that many (although I'll bet they found a couple). As far as search and seizure goes, schools operate under different rules for lockers and even for searching the person.

New Jersey v. TLO would be the one applied here.

My kid also heard that 30+ kids were busted for pot. She did witness one student being escorted by an officer.

As a side note to all this, she said at the beginning of school that morning, the principal made an announcement that he wanted a productive day at school and asked that the teachers not issue hall passes for the day. Hmmmm

Wasn't trying to cause trauma, didnt present any of this as facts. I openly stated I was was seeking facts. Best antidote for rumours, them facts.

That could been because the kid was causing a disturbance in the classroom if they were in a Remain in Place Lockdown. If the Principal issued a No Pass day then they might have had some inkling something was going to happen. Kids post stuff on Face Book, Twitter, etc. and give themselves away a lot of the time.

Or, the conspiracy theorist might say that the entire exercise was an administration-manufactured excuse to do some serious drug sweeps, under the guise of a bomb threat lockdown. Who knows, the police might even cooperate in such a drill, in the hopes of catching out some troublemakers and druggies.

I'm not saying I'm a conspiracy theorist. But the theories do occur to me...

They don't need to go to that trouble. Lockers can be searched at any time by school personnel as long as a particular student's locker isn't targeted. You get around that by searching blocks of lockers.

This is my first post because this situation is so unbelievable and someone needs to say something. I work at GMHS and I really wish that the truth could travel as quickly as the rumors.
Please let folks know - there were NO arrests. Nothing was found during the searches.

Which was the point behind this thread, so the folks who knew the truth could address the rumors.

Levels of school lockdown (PG County variety, although they're supposed to be standardized across the country):

Secure the building:
An incident has happened in the school's vicinity, armed robbery as an example. All entrances are secured, security and Administration conduct hallway sweeps. Students in temporaries come into the building. Any classes such as PE remain in the building. The school day goes on but no passes are issued except in an emergency. Call for an Administrator in that case.

Remain in place:
Usually asked for by local authorities due to an incident in the area such as a traffic accident and clean up or reconstruction is necessary or the road is blocked. Students remain in the building until given the school is given the clearance to dismiss. If during the school day life goes on.

Shelter in place:
The response to a hazardous material spill or a bio/chem/radiation incident. Students come indoors, outside ventilation is disabled doors are locked with no admittance except for authorized personnel. This could continue for a longer or shorter period of time.

Lockdown:
The building is secured. There is no movement of anyone for any reason inside the building until the building is swept and cleared by law enforcement. This would be implemented in the case of an intruder or large scale in school incident such as a fight or a bomb threat. If a bomb threat the building might be evacuated if there is a safe staging area to which the students would report.

If that's the case then they, and school officials, are ignoring state law if drugs or weapons and federal law if weapons.

Contraband as far as drugs/pot are concerned since I believe guns are what they were looking for, though according to my kid, the students were never told the reason for the search of their book bags. Is this a violation of their rights - not given a reason for search of personal property?

As someone said earlier, I can be in the conspiracy theory camp on all of this, but only because I don't trust my government and all of its entities.

No. it's not a violation, read this link to school related Constitutional law cases I posted earlier.

But, if you think it is, hire a lawyer and sue.

Here's the thing, you about 1/2 believe it was some sort of "conspiracy". Yet, if there had been an incident you'd be first in line yelling, "Why the #### didn't they do something before it happened?"

So take your pick-do what they did and forestall an incident or have them pretend that nothing's going on and have someone shot. Your choice.

Nope that's where you are wrong - I would NOT be one of the ones questioning why something was not done beforehand. I believe in a higher power that has our fate predetermined. What will be will be. Someone serious about blowing and shooting #### up will not give us a warning - they will just do it!

Public’s Help Needed Identifying 911 Caller in High School Shooter Hoax

"On September 18, 2014 at 8:25 AM, a male subject called the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center (ECC) and reported people in the school had guns and were going to start shooting at 10:00 AM.

The school was immediately contacted and locked down in accordance with SMCPS emergency protocols. Several Sheriff’s Office deputies and troopers from the Maryland State Police arrived at the high school within minutes. A perimeter was established and the parking lot was closed to vehicular traffic.

The entire school was systematically searched inside and outside for weapons. All lockers were searched as well.

At approximately 12:25 PM, the search was complete and no firearms were found.

The school returned to normal at short time later.
