Artificial turf and possible cancer risk

I've always worried about the use of crumb rubber from ground up tires in artificial turf fields like St Mary's is considering for its public school fields. Some members of my family are allergic to latex, and I wondered about the latex rubber in tires. Now I see a story on NBC news about artificial turf linked to cancer, especially in soccer goalies. And apparently there have been concerns for a while. Of soccer players who develop rare cancers, well over 80% of those players are goalies who play on crumb rubber artificial turf. Goalies inherently spend more time rolling around in the stuff, and inhaling the dust and crumbs.

Griffin has compiled a list of 38 American soccer players -- 34 of them goalies – who have been diagnosed with cancer. At least a dozen played in Washington, but the geographic spread is nationwide. Blood cancers like lymphoma and leukemia dominate the list.

Do we REALLY want that kind of turf on all our public high school fields? It worries me.
