Where do box turtles winter?

There is a box turtle in a window box around my below grade basement window. It is about two feet deep. I think it is too sluggish to go anywhere if I take it out of there.

Just bring it in the house and release it sometime in March.

I find them under leaves in the spring all the time when I am raking them up. Leave him be, turtles have a territory that they know really well.

In a 2 foot deep window box? Remove it from the window box and leave it be.

Loose brushpiles over soft soil with a high content of decaying leaves and brush/bark are the best overwinter habitat for box turtles. They bury themselves under the leaves and emerge in the Spring.
