MD. needs to cut 1.1 billion dollars

All those tax increases.... all that crap about casino money... and this past administration has spent like drunken sailors. I've been highly concerned the past few years and seeing it play out makes me sick. Something that I am having a hard time understanding is why the state would have depended so much in federal funding all these years instead of being self-supporting? But according to several articles, they are blaming the cuts in federal funding for the shortfalls.

The State is the biggest culprit of high management jobs that don't actually manage a single person and hopefully cuts will be made from the top of the bush and not the bottom to include education. Out of every dollar the state collects, 48 cents goes to education, 25 cents to health, 11 cents to public safety, and 16 cents to other expenses.

Since following politics, 25-30 years, this is the biggest shortfall I can remember.

The $1B structural deficit has been publicized for at least three years now. It results from too many Democrats being employed by the State of Maryland.

It's ok.. Hogan will get ALL the blame, and a Democrat will get elected next term to make it even worse.

I believe Hogan is the man to turn this State around. It won't be easy and it clearly will not be pretty but it will be better in the long run.

I think Hogan is being somewhat smart about all this. He is putting it out there before even taking office which in the past administrations, we've heard about the financial mess left after the fact while the person who left it for us is out of sight.

A friend of mine was kicked off of O'Malley's Facebook page for asking about the projected budget shortfall earlier this year when he asked what was going to be done to derail it all...

I was kicked off AFSCME's webpage earlier this year when I asked if they send out any other emails to those signed up to receive them that didn't have to do with fishing for votes for democratic candidates? Remember, all state workers are mandated to participate in AFSCME by paying them dues and AFSCME supports democratic candidates. That is the 1st thing that needs to go in this state, mandating employees to participate in AFSCME by forcing them to pay dues.

Shortened because, IMO, that is a more appropriate statement. I thought having to deal with the MVA people was horrific. Now, I've been attempting to correct an error with the dept. of labor which just may be impossible. Phone calls, email and registered letters have not yet found anyone that will acknowledge who or how to get things straightened out.

I'm hopeful that Mr. Hogan will fix many things, but fear he will run into too many roadblocks from the "in crowd". By the time the "in crowd" becomes the "out crowd" it may very well be too late for significant reform.

Apparently you are not paying very good attention as the initial budget shortfall was at least this large during the recession.

This also is not news . If Mr. hogan is surprised by Marlyand's structural deficit then he obviously wan't paying attention either.

BTW.. You need to look up the defintion of what a structural budget deficit is. Some else pointed this out to you and it is obvious you do not understand. Pretty poor for someone who claims to follow such things.

Just think of the actual deficit the State would have if they hand't sloughed off a lot of that debt to the Counties.
Things such as Teacher pensions.

Do you ever contribute anything to any thread that doesn't drip with disdain? Yes... we all knew a structual deficit was looming but as tax payers, many believed that gambling would make this gap less or close it. And as Hijinx pointed out, the moving of pensions for teachers to the county seems to have also done nothing.

Secondly, the past structural deficit was 600 million not 1.1 billion.

If you guys raise the toll on the Nice bridge anymore, I'm going to have to stop coming to Maryland.

*chuckle*...just the other day, we were talking about building a small car ferry to cross from our island (Piney Point) if the toll is raised any more and the traffic backups get any worse.

The idea of a ferry from Piney Point to Va. has been around for a while. I would love to see it , but no one wants the landing next to their house. NIMBY.

I also would like a Ferry from Solomons to the Eastern Shore. NIMBY again.

Dyson always said no one would ride it and it was too expensive.
I always wondered how North Carolina afforded their ferry's.
I spoke to Dyson one day about it and he said that it would not have ridership, then he said it would overcrowd the roads leading to it,
I could never understand how a ferry no one would ride would overcrowd the roads.

Anyway it won't happen , any more than the idea of a bridge across the bay down here in Southern Maryland will happen.
Louis Goldstein is dead, and the bridge died with him.

We don't charge you to COME to Maryland (northbound), but we damn well will get your last dollar as you try to escape (southbound)!

I sometimes feel accomplished when I drive up to DC on 301 and come back down 95 through Fredericksburg. Like sticking it to the man.

:yeahthat: And stopping to fuel up before crossing the state line allows for a little smirk as you node at the "Welcome to Maryland" sign...:high5:

Isn't it a shame people feel like that?

But wait a couple of years McAulliffe will soon get you like Omalley got us.

Welcome to a Democrat Governor.

Less than half of all state workers are covered by bargaining units. Of those, only some are covered by AFSCME. Law enforcement is covered by SLEOLA and professionals by MPEC. No state workers are forced to join these unions either. You only pay union dues if you voluntarily join by signing a membership card. There is no mandate forcing state workers to pay membership dues.

Upkeep and operating costs would kill a ferry. Even at locations where it could be cost-effective, would drivers have the patience necessary to adhere to a ferry schedule?
