Why in Hell were schools opened today

Last year they closed every time the Wind blew. On my way to work today not a single road was clean. Even Suitland Pkwy was messed up.

Not sure what happend in Charles or south later in the AM, but when I left Waldorf around 5AM, there wasn't a snowflake to be seen. It wasn't until I was in Cheltenham before I saw evidence of snow. Then it was hellacious all the way into Laurel. Even at 7AM (while struggling along), PG County hadn't changed the school schedule. If my kid was a PG county kid - not only would I be sad that he was in a PG County school, I would've been pissed about them not at least delaying school.

I don't think it started snowing in Charles until around 8AM (or just before). Around 1030AM, I got notice that they had cancelled after Pre-K and were holding morning Pre-K through the end of the day to keep the buses off the road.

I got the same notice about canceled Pre-K. But I got several similar notices about various canceled activities, as well as buses that were stuck in snow/ice. It was bad enough today for a closure and/or 2 hour delay.

I think it had to do with a combination of timing, forecasted and actual amount not really even measurable and SHA deciding not spend the money to treat roads for icing. Had any one of those things been different it would have most likely changed this morning's call.

In reality, some areas are going to be better than expected and some worse. And no matter what their decision, they will receive scrutiny. Last year, they were overly cautious and called off school on some days where they could've managed. This year, they leaned the other way and probably missed the call. It happens.

I still blame the litigous society. The clenched-ass approach is the result of parents suing because little Johnny slipped on ice or was in a bus that was part of a fender bender on a snowy day. Heck, they don't even let the kids out for recess when it's "cold".

PG County absolutely blows when it comes to snow removal.

People were all over the road this morning. Cars couldn't get up the small hill on rt.4 past Wayson's Corner and had the fast lane blocked. Another 5 cars on the right shoulder that couldn't make it up. 4 more cars smashed into the exit ramp guardrails, and an inch of slushy mix on the roads.

I don't know which Prince George's County Public Schools a couple of you guys attend but they were closed today after starting out with a 2 hour delay.

The reality is that a close decision for the entire day has to be made by 5AM in all the local districts and the weather and road conditions here didn't warrant that at that point. Couple that with the fact the storm brought more snow than usual with this type of system (coming out of PA, we get hammered with systems coming up from the south) and it was a tough call.

As far as Calvert being closed, why? I was on the road at 6:15 until around 7 (high schools start picking up kids at 6:30 I Calvert) and there was nothing on the roads. It didn't start snowing where I ended up in Charles until 9:30 when I was picking up decoys (nothing was flying).

RTE 4 had a couple issues, an accident that closed both n-bound lanes right past 260 plus the issue at Hill's Bridge. There was an accident on Mt. Harmony about 6. Right where there are always accidents no matter the weather.

I'll hate to see what happens when we actually get a snow storm.
