Charles Co. Department of Community Services Announces Closures for Feb. 21

Due to inclement weather forecasts, the Recreation Division has the following cancellations for Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015:

-- Lackey and North Point Indoor Pools closed

-- Port Tobacco Recreation Center closed.

-- Elite Gymnastics and Recreation Center closed

-- All youth indoor sports games/practices are canceled

-- All school based community centers are closed.

Charles Co. Public School Activities

Due to inclement weather forecasts, all Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, activities are canceled. The Maryland State swimming and wrestling championships have been postponed. Wrestling is rescheduled for Monday; swimming will be rescheduled at a later date.

Residents Urged to Clear Sidewalks and Entrances

Snow-covered sidewalks create challenges for pedestrians, especially those who walk to and from work or school. In order to ensure the safety of pedestrians, the Department of Public Works urges citizens to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice. Do your part to keep your neighborhood safe for emergency personnel, pedestrians, and cyclists. Develop a plan to help neighbors who are disabled or otherwise unable to move snow.

Clearing driveways and entrances is the responsibility of property owners or homeowner associations. All residential and business owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks on their own property.

When clearing your sidewalks, remember to:

· Dress appropriately

· Use a sturdy shovel

· Bend knees to lift snow. Use your legs, shoulders and torso. Do not use your back.

· Remember to rest when needed and hydrate.

Fitness Classes to Resume at Loffler Senior Activity Center

LEONARDTOWN -- The St. Mary's County Department of Aging & Human Services anticipates fitness classes will resume on Monday, February 23. The resumption follows cancellation of classes on February 19 and 20.

Participants are encouraged to call 301-737-5670, ext. 1656 after 8 a.m. Monday for an updated status of the fitness classes.

Tourism Office Announces Closures for Feb. 21

Due to inclement weather forecasts, the following Charles County facilities and services will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 21:

• The Crain Memorial Welcome Center located at 12480 Crain Highway in Newburg

• Port Tobacco Historic Village (Port Tobacco Court House, Burch House and Stagg Hall)

Charles County Government will provide additional operational status updates as warranted.

St. Mary's Recreation Programs and Centers to Close Early

Recreation Programs and Centers to Close Early on February 21

LEONARDTOWN -- Due to the approaching winter storm, all Recreation and Parks programs and Recreation Centers will close at noon on Saturday. All youth basketball games scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and on will not be held.

Recreation and Parks facilities include the Leonard Hall, Margaret Brent, Carver Rec Center and Hollywood Recreation Centers, Chancellor's Run, the Gymnastics Center and the Great Mills Swimming Pool.

St. Mary's County will continue to provide additional updates as warranted.
