Potatoes

I usually plant my potatoes St. Patrick's day or the first Saturday or two after. Only problem this year was I didn't get potatoes from store and let them sit long enough to have eyes and sprouts by St. Patricks day. I bought potatoes today but I don't think they will be sprouting in 3 or 4 weeks... will they? Any idea how to made them *turn* faster?

I used to have a veg garden (square foot gardening), and have planted potatoes. My children used to love to dig them up! I need to do that again. As far buying seed potatoes, I don't think it is necessary. You can just buy store potatoes. Nine times out of ten when I buy a 5-10 lb bag of potatoes at Giant, they start sprouting after a few days and I have to use them up quickly. I keep them in an open bin in my pantry which is obviously dark. I have read that sprouting works both ways, in light or dark. I buy yellow gold and russets. They have both sprouted even when I wasn't trying to get them to! Good luck!

Thanks I've always done mine from store potatoes. Except one year I strayed and wanted to try "Irish Cobbler" from Southern States, didn't work very well and none of them were sprouted potatoes. I prefer store sprouted - its easier. lol Thanks!

As wet as the ground is and will continue to be expect everything you put in the ground to rot before it can sprout.

I had hoped to plant this three weeks out or more after St. Patrick's Day. Hopefully March winds will dry everything! It has been a muddy winter!

We should have our peas in the ground by now... don't see it getting dry enough anytime soon. :/

I've never put mine in this early. Usually mid/late march :) Here' last years as babies and beyond.

I've never put mine in this early. Usually mid/late march :) Have you ever tried the purple pods? Those are soo much easier to spot when picking. :) I grow LOTS of peas. Belvak can back me on that! :lmao: I experimented with the purple last year and they taste the same! I definitely will do more purple this year!

Very nice! My Husband just built a green house, and so far, we love it. Planted tomato seeds in it a week ago, and have some spinach so far.
