Nationally, most of the people who receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are white. According to 2013 data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the program, 40.2 percent of SNAP recipients are white, 25.7 percent are black, 10.3 percent are Hispanic, 2.1 percent are Asian and 1.2 percent are Native American.

Actually that's not according to Hufpo...all the info is readily available from the USDA website...but most people, including those here, are just too damn lazy to look it up for themselves. They need Fox or The Blaze to distort the information first.

While you posted the racial make up, you failed to note the large majority of SNAP households that include children or elderly or a disabled member...(no Hijinx, the majority of those households are not baby factories).

And yes, the number of able bodied folks needing assistance increased during and after the Great Recession. Yet those on the extreme far right of the spectrum believe that the country can endure the worst economic crisis in 80+ years and we should see no impact on safety net programs and should cut such programs.

The larger issue is that it exists in the fashion that it does; creating and maintaining dependence. We spend, fed and state, about $1 trillion a year on what most people would recognize as welfare. That's the equivalent of just giving $50,000 a year to 20 million families of four or 80,000,000 people; a quarter of the national population. I leave it to be assumed that less than one in four are in need. But, to be for sure, even if they are, those 20 million families are not being given that money or even the equivalent in goods and services. It just costs that much. The rest goes to the bureaucracies we create to 'help' people. If we just GAVE people the money we'd be no worse off and not have so many people invested in voting to continue the current systems.

Glad you said that because it gets to WHAT happens with welfare; they spend it. Our economy would be FAR better off today had TARP been handing $1 trillion a year to poor people than what we did. Banks, corporations all just sat on it and are still sitting on PILES of cash. Historic piles. Their reasons are sound but THEY are not the troubled asset. Our homes were. Our lives, the middle class is what SHOULD matter.

Consider; YOUR personal welfare is not helped by how much some bank has or some business. THEIR welfare IS helped by how much YOU have because YOU are gonna spend it thus they can go earn it be it cars, food, homes, accessories, you name it. Even if you do not spend it, you're gonna save it and/or invest it...where? IN banks. Who then have it to lend to business.

My point was it would get blown on crap and people would still be "hungry". Ever hear about government housing where a nice shiny new complex is built all the copper is pulled out of it then people are bitching that the government isn't providing a livable place to live?
