Hello! Our daughter officially graduates from college in May although she finished all her degree requirements back in December. She will graduate cum laude with a major in Communications and a minor in leadership. She has done six internships over the last two years in DC. She has excellent references from her internships. We all thought those internships would put her way ahead of the game. Wrong. She is a sweet kid who never gave us any trouble.

Besides Southern Maryland Online and the local papers, where else should she check for jobs? She has her resume on Indeed.com but nothing so far. It is so discouraging. She is willing to relocate for a job.

Thanks for any suggestions!

uploading a resume to indeed isn't helpful. you have to troll the job postings constantly and apply to them ALL. ALL OF THEM. Anything she is even remotely qualified for and can make the argument for. Shame she just missed all of the summer pathways announcements. However, USAjobs under the search term pathways still brings some up, those are great opportunities and there are many in the DC area and tend to have less stringent experience requirements. The trick is to not just apply to things that come up under a communications or public affairs search. Lots of different jobs can use those skills but may not say so explicitly, operations research for instance. Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestions. She mainly does her job searching on indeed and has applied for over 150 jobs, and like you said, ones that aren't just specifically for communications or public affairs. She had looked into the pathways thing a year or so ago but had forgotten about it for this. She will definitely check it out again. Thank you so much!

Tell her to keep an open mind and think outside her field. A lot of times people start in a position that has nothing to do with what they want to be when they grow up, but it opens a door to other opportunities and helps them build contacts.

There was a JOBS van parked in front of the library in Lex Park earlier today. Don't know if they are still there or will be again soon.

Does her school have a career services center? Probably too late, if I remember correctly we were supposed to start early our senior year.

I'd suggest you call the white house but I understand that they pay women less than the men they hire. Oh well!

Good advice. Daughter grad in International Studies with a minor in anthropology. She did that whole thing about answering everything. Like submit, submit, submit like crazy. She now has a great job as a 5 state tech exec for a finishing company which includes many gov contracts from battleships to small surgical instruments, ex. GE. She does have to travel several times a month through her territory, but works at home the majority of the time. She never saw herself in this field, but it has worked out great. They are starting a family and she can still do her job. Win/win! Point being to coincide with your point is just put yourself out there. Amazing things happen.

From what I'm reading .all of it is good advice but don't forget about the old way .If she knows what she wants try to knock on some doors ,it worked for my youngest and many HR people seem to like(remember) a person once they get to meet them in person .
