Reported tornado touched down on Horseshoe Road and ripped the roof off a house. Reported no personal injuries. Numerous trees row from 7th district across to Mechanicsville.

I've got my fingers crossed that things out on St. Catherine's Island are all OK. Got a big old maple tree half dead and hanging over the clubhouse just waiting to fall on it.

Edit: Just received word that everything fine on the island. The worst of the storm track was just north..went up the Wicomico.

Just wondering, not that it would save me, I went all my life with no tornado warning siren until I moved to Leonardtown. But I ask, why isn't it going off when we've had actual warnings this year?

I thought they only sounded the alarm when one was on the ground. 7D sounded theirs as soon as soon as yesterday's storm touched down.

Seems like I remember it going off when a funnel was sighted locally whether it had touched down or not. Spotting a funnel meant seek shelter. The last time I heard Leonardtown's go off 13 times it was a malfunction at 2 in the morning during the winter. Now it appears a tornado did damage near Fairgrounds Road on Sunday. No warning of that either.

Probably because there's a difference between a warning (a tornado is either likely OR observed) and "a confirmed tornado is on the ground; take cover now". If they sounded the siren for every warning, it would be numbing and people would start to ignore it. Also, the tornado yesterday was not that close to Leonardtown.

From 2005 to 2014, there were 299 warnings in Maryland - about 30 per year.

There have been 17 warnings so far this year in Maryland.

But in reality, Maryland had "only" 8 tornadoes per year on average, from 1983 to 2014.

With a roughly 4 warnings to 1 confirmed, sounding the siren for every warning would lead to complacency.

Just got back from a ride around Chaptico, down Hurry, Manor, Grampton Rd.s, a good number of downed trees, a couple of lost barns. I'm sure the roads were a mess last night, but they are clear now. Some really big old cedars and oaks seemed to take the hit along with the normal maple and pear trees that always seem to break up in these storms. I guess the ground is pretty saturated and it could have been worse.

Probably when it's gone off before for a warning, the funnel was spotted closer to Leonardtown or moving toward the area. Last year, the one went off here and I could hear another one off in the distance too.

one of our neighbors had a cute story about the warning....as she was walking down the street, a little girl ran from her house towards her with a frightened look...the little girl said, "my Mommy told me to tell you to go home now, there is a potatoe warning in effect"

Better that than a tomato warning.
