    Official What's Fixed or New

    Howdy all,

Just fixed an issue whereby some custom avatars where too large when viewing the What's New / Activity Stream page at http://forums.somd.com/activity.php

Some of the avatars would extend over the text making it hard to read.

    Banner Code

All of the ad banner code was updated this evening. We now use ASYNC Javascript for all banners which means that banners will no longer delay the loading of the forum content. Also, if the ad servers are slow or offline, the forums will no longer hangup.

Also, for the rectangular ads that appear in the first and last post in each thread, the text will no longer run right up against the ad. There is now a 10px margin.

We realize that some people use AD Blockers. If you would still like to support somd.com and see fewer ads, we now support Google's new Contributor program. You can contribute a few dollars per month and reduce the number of Google ads you see on the site. Your support helps and is appreciated.

Improved User Experience with Attached Images

We have just modified the image handling to improve the user experience:

-- There can be up to 6 attachments per post (previously 5)

-- Image thumbnails are now 250 pixels wide (previously 100)

-- Image thumbnails now include dimensions and other file specs

-- The image uploader no longer uses Flash. It now uses AJAX. This is for increased security and support for people who no longer use Flash.

-- Images in the first and last post on a page will no longer clash with the rectangular ad.

-- The maximum dimensions of any uploaded image is 800x800 pixels. If you upload something larger, it will be automatically downsized. (Note the server will not allow any upload larger than 2MB)

People in the registration process are no longer penalized

There was an issue whereby someone who was in the new user registration process (between registering, validating email, and being approved by a moderator) would actually have fewer permissions than an unregistered guest.

This has now been resolved. Users awaiting approval of their accounts will now have the same privs as they had before beginning the registration process.

Added Thread Prefixes to Select Forums

I added a set of Thread Prefixes to the PSA forum to help highlight threads that might be of interest to readers.

I also added a few test prefixes to the Life in So. Md. forum. If folks would like more, please start a new thread and discuss it and then bring it to my attention for implementation. I would think that no more than a dozen prefixes per forum lest it become too complicated.

To add a prefix to a thread, you have to be in the advanced editor mode.

    Now updated:
    HTML Code:
     [youtube]YOUTUBE_UNIQUEID[/youtube]
    code.

It will now use the latest embed code which supports HTML5 and does not require ADOBE FLASH.

HOWEVER, The easiest way to include a YouTube, to use the Insert Video icon on the post editor. See attached pic for example:

Per post character limit raised from 10,000 to 100,000

Just realized that we had some silly 10,000 character limit per post. This often presents a problem when trying to post longer posts that include formatting and hyperlinks, forcing the poster to spread the info over one or more post to get it all in.

This limit has been raised to 100,000 characters per post.

    SoundCloud Embedding now supported

You can now embed SoundCloud clips in posts. Just use the BBcode (there is also a SoundCloud icon on the WYSIWYG editor menu bar):

    HTML Code:
    [SOUNDCLOUD]278377215[/SOUNDCLOUD]
The UniqueID is a bit more tedious to get than is YouTube:

-- Click on the share link on SoundCloud for the audio clip
-- Click on the embed tab
-- check the WordPress box and copy the code, which will look like this:

    HTML Code:
    [soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/278377215" params="auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true" width="100%" height="450" iframe="true" /]
The UniqueID is the number right after "/tracks/

    Example below:
