That chicken was so good I need to write some food porn about it.

The wood fired chicken dinner is two spatchcocked and boned breasts with the drumette attached. It was marinated in something wonderful, seasoned liberally with za'atar, then flame grilled, and Monello and I figured it must have been finished in the oven.

It was moist. It was juicy. It was flavorful. It was nicely charred and smoky. I want to eat it every day. I want to marry it and bear its love child. I can't get it out of my head. All chickens should eat right and say their prayers that some day they can become the wood fired chicken at Brick. I'm almost sorry I had it because there are so many things on the menu that I'd like to try, but Brick chicken and I are now in a committed relationship.

On the side were roasted potatoes, which Monello liked, and a clever iron pot of Brussel sprouts, which I devoured. The sprouts were sweet and tart, combined with what I think were pickled onions. Monello didn't care for them bit I thought they were delicious. The potatoes were good but had too much tummy room competition for me to get involved.

For an appetizer we had the street corn, which was very unique and delicious. Five niblets, served on a wood board with compound butter, green salsa, lime wedges, salt, and some type of Mexican seasoning. The presentation was really cool, and the corn was nicely charred.

We also had a margherita pizza that was amazing. My first bite wasn't spectacular, but once I sprinkled a little salt on it the 'za came alive. That crust...my god. Usually I like my pizza loaded with stuff, but it would be a crime to gunk up that crust too much.

Yeah, we'll be going back. :yay: :yay:

It's a new place - there will be some ups and downs.

We had great food, although we didn't get entrees and we thought our starters and salads were a bit overpriced for what we got. BUT! really love the brick oven cooked wings, and our 2nd batch was better than the first *because* they were more charred.

Looking forward to trying some of the other entrees!

I had the mussels too. They weren't bad, as in off or not fresh, but they were bad. I think that was one of those things that shouldn't have been cooked in the wood oven. They were tough, chewy and stringy. However, my mushroom pizza was great and the giant's meal of the meatball appetizer and gouda cheese burger were great.

The giant said the reviews were hit and miss but he thought his meal was great. I said my meal was hit and miss, so I could understand how the reviews were mixed.

However, service was excellent and they had a wide variety of beers on tap. Serving portions were huge. An appetizer could be a meal.

See, and I like my mussels completely cooked, just like I like my oysters. I don't want them to have any goober, which is why I've stopped eating both at restaurants. Now I'll have to try them at Brick, darn it.

I can see how people would complain about the corn app because they're charred, but that's the way it's supposed to be.

that's because it's not some frozen corn mush off the back of a Sysco truck.

I like corn mush and I've never had it off the back of a Sysco truck nor have I had it frozen. I have had it fresh off my grandmother's wood stove, and it was never charred.

Have you had never had corn mush?

Lots of people prefer steamed or boiled corn on the cob, and that's fine. But reading some of the Yelp reviews, I'm like, "What part of 'wood fired grill' wasn't plain English??" One guy was bitching about how they need two parts of the restaurant: one that serves their "fancy" food and one that does mozz sticks and normal burger sliders. I'm like, Green Turtle is right across the street!!!!!

This is why we can't have nice things.

actually I was commenting about the overuse of frozen/pre-cooked/microwaved vegetables you're served at every. single. restaurant. Charred corn sounds like a deliciously fresh alternative to that, and probably tastes a little weird to those who prefer water-soaked microwaved vegetables.

mush was a bad word to use. I forgot an actual dish exists with that name, which has nothing to do with the app Vrai had. :bigwhoop:

I was going to give them another month or so to work out some kinks, but after hearing from more realistic reviews here, I'm going try and make the guy take me there ASAP :yum:

I was going to offer to make it for you. I like mine drizzled with maple syrup. And now my poor husband is going to have to eat your portion.

Cornmeal mush = Polenta

I have to admit, the first time I tasted polenta was as an adult and I thought it was pretty bland. Even today when I make it, I doctor it up a bit. However, I think polenta has more of stone ground grits mouth feel than a corn mush mouth feel.

My daughter and her boyfriend tried the Brick the other night after I mentioned the good reviews to her. She liked it and I'm sure she will go back. One of her comments to me was, "It's way too fancy to be located in Calvert County."

It's no different than The Duck or Back Creek or a couple of places on the Island.
